DRILL

Dual Purpose Tool for Masonry and Stone

Develop-

INTRODU · ED by Ucan ments Ltd.. Portsmouth Road. Esher. Surrey, UK, as an economical means of drilling brickwork, concrete and stone, the model PPRI drill weighs only 7 lb. It may be used either as a normal rotary drill or quickly con- verted into a percussion machine.

Drilling capacities are 5 in. in ›ft brick. 3 in. in granite and con- crete. 5. 16 in. in steel and 5% in. in hardwood: the chuck accepts a shank of up to in. It runs on a.c. or d.c. mains and produces 850 r.p.m. or 10,200 percussion blows per min- ute.

A shock-absorbing drive minimises the vibration passing from the percus-

Ucan PPRI drill

sion unit to the gears, increasing the tool's working life and reducing operator's fatigue. Standard equip- ment includes a drill chuck, a side handle and 711⁄2 ft. of 3-core 1.r.s. cable.

ACOUSTIC CEILING

New Material Unaffected by Moisture

DEVELOPMENT of a new type of acoustical material which is totally unaffected by moisture is announced by Armstrong Cork Co., Lancaster. Pa.. USA. Known as Armstrong Ceramaguard, it is a ceramic-type material with a totally inert composi- tion that does not expand, contract or weaken under prolonged exposure to high humidity conditions.

The makers claim that Ceramaguard could be installed in panel sizes up to 21⁄2 ft. x 5 ft. without sagging effects. Initially, however, the material is offered in 2 ft. x 2 ft. and 2 ft. x 4 ft. units to accommodate standard grid

Shower test on Ceramaguard suspension systems. Both panels fea- ture a fissured surface design, and have a back coating that improves sound attenuation and minimizes the passage of dirt-laden air up through the material.

An acrylic paint finish makes the material grease resistant and washable.

Armstrong Cork have a marketing office in Hong Kong. Distributors in- clude: A. V. Dionisio, Manila; Getz Bros. and Co., Singapore, Bangkok, Taipei, and Hong Kong; and Hyun- dae Engineering Co., Ltd., Seoul.

SMOKE DETECTOR

Probe is Inserted into Ventilating Duct

THE probe of the Photain smoke detector is designed for insertion into a ventilating duct, on the assumption that this is usually the earliest place where smoke can be detected in a large building. The alarm bell sounds as soon as the smallest trace of smoke reaches the probe.

An elongated open steel tube, 16 in. long and 2% in. in diameter with a Sin. diameter movable mounting flange, holds two photo-electric cells.

Photain smoke detector

one at the inner end and the other- together with a low voltage lamp- at the end outside the duct. from the cells is fed into a control Output unit and balanced for normal condi- tions.

As soon as smoke passes through the probe it affects the inner cell, putting the circuit out of balance and operating the alarm. The two-cell balanced circuit provides for voltage fluctuations, which affect both cells equally. When the smoke stops, the alarm automatically resets.

The control unit, in a cast-

aluminium housing suitable for wall or panel mounting, contains power supplies, setting-up control, red and green indicator lights, lamp failure relay and alarm relay.

Photain Controls Ltd.. Randalls Road, Leatherhead, Surrey, UK, are the makers. They are not represented in S.E. Asia.
