chloride and staining iron compounds. The chemical actions taking place The chemical actions taking place change the metallic component to completely inert substances. Hydrogen formed is in the gaseous state and will rapidly diffuse out of the grout.
Because of its greater density and low absorption properties, it is not af fected by water, oil, grease or corro sive fluid. The microcellular structure of the material improves frost and fire resistance and together with the vibration absorbing properties of the aggregate - provides good resistance to the long term effects of machine operating.

FINISHING AID
Wind, heat and dryness can make finishing of concrete surfaces difficult and time-consuming. The rapid drying of concrete caused by these conditions frequently results in plastic cracking, crusting, stickiness, efflorescence and uneven surfaces.
Master Builders Co. Ltd., Toronto 15, Canada, have released a new pro- duct, Confilm, which reduces evapora- tion from plastic concrete surfaces up to 80 per cent. It is not a curing agent, but a liquid that is sprayed over con- crete immediately after screeding. It produces a barrier to evaporation that effectively eliminates or minimises many of the usual hot weather finish- ing problems.
CABLE MEASUREMENT
Cables and wires with diameters of up to 30 mm can be accurately mea- sured by means of the Bussroll cable- measuring machine. Calibrated in 100 divisions, the device accom-

centre and a tapered reel-on drum, sur- mounted by a string dispenser with built-in cutting knife, at the other end. Both the reel-on drum and reel- ing-off cone have grooves down one side to permit the respective cable coils to be tied up without difficulty.
The reel-on drum also features a turning handle on one of its spokes and a detachable front to facilitate removal of the cable. As a safety pre- caution the machine incorporates a foot-brake device, operated by means of a lever mounted underneath the supporting frame. Pressing the lever down allows reeling to be carried out; letting it up again automatically stops the ball-bearing mounted reeling-off cone from revolving, preventing the cable from continuing to wind when not required.
Overall dimensions of the machine are 2.33 m long by 1.4 m high by 750 mm wide. The rigid supporting frame is fitted with four rubber-tyred cas- tors.

to eliminate lead slip and jamming. Ac- curate adjustments to the lead can be made by turning the knurled end; three separate ends in different colours being supplied with each pencil to per- mit rapid indentification of lead de- gree. Micronised-graphite leads in seven degrees between HB and 5H have been specially made for the pen- cil. All lay down a dense line.
