living and bedrooms. Their areas are 330 sq. ft. for nine persons.

Thirty-six small flats are situated mainly at the ground floor and are of 160 sq. ft. area (four to five persons) plus a small walled area and 38 flats

are of miscellaneous sizes ranging up to 12 person accommodation.

Staircase Access

Access to each flat is by staircase running the whole height of the build- ing between each pair of flats, while

wide promenades and bridges link up the flats at the fifth and ninth floors. The lifts stop only at the promenade floors so that no tenant has to walk up or down more than two storeys. There is thus a distinct economy in lift installations and in the number of lifts needed since the proximity of staircases encourages their use.

This type of flat is very popular compared with the central corridor or access-balcony type of flat because of the through ventilation provided and also the privacy given to each dwel ling.

Other accommodation, sited on the ground floor, consists of seven bays allocated to shops, as well as a duty room and small barrack area, trans- former station, telephone switchgear room, toilets and an Auxiliary Medic-
