Bitumen, in sufficient thickness, has always been accepted as providing a perfect impermeable membrane for concrete. However there are disadvantages; whether a hot bitumen or a cold bitumen solution is used, they both have to be applied by brush or squeegee, involving a tedious and costly labour operation.
Polythene, ideally used in sheet form, is equally acceptable but suffers from the disadvantage that, when laid loosely on concrete, it rucks up and becomes punctured by subsequent trades. More important, it is not possible on site to obtain watertight and moisture-tight lap joints.

combination of these two methods of providing a waterproof membrane, utilising the best features and eliminating the disadvantages.
Bitu-thene is manufactured by combining a thick, self- adhesive bitumen compound with stout, 500-gauge Polythene, and is supplied direct to the site in rolls up to 36" wide. Bitu-thene, sticky side downwards, is simply laid onto the concrete to.which it becomes permanently secured. Joints automatically become waterproof by overlapping the underside, sticky surface of the Bitu-thene, forming one-inch water and moisture - vapour-proof lapped joints. It is as simple as that.
