Exhibition and Meeting Hall
Immediately below the delegates offices on the lower ground floor is an air-conditioned exhibition hall. Intended to cater for lectures, small conventions and exhibitions, this hall, 92ft. by 36 ft.. can be sub-divided into two or three sections (each large enough to form a 100-seat lecture hall) by means of special lift-up par- titions which slide vertically out of sight.
In this hall attention has again been paid to sound-proofing the doors and walls. Apart from the curved end walls, the rest of the room, which has a mosaic floor, is lined with local hardwoods: the ceiling is a light coloured local timber, Ramin or Melawis, while the vertical partitions are sheathed with Kempas. Side walls are of slatted Merbau laid over perforated aluminium and glass- fibre.
Because of its importance as a centre for civic and cultural activi- ties, the building has been set back from the main road with a landscap- ed forecourt in front and spacious car parks on the seaward side. The pedestrian approach is from Shenton Way, while there is a covered vehi- cular entrance on the seaward side. accessible from the south gate.
