torium, 50 observers on the stage and 492 seats for the public and other observers in the steeply-raked rear portion of the auditorium.
For plenary sessions and confer- ences where the speakers are mainly on the stage, there is room for 465 persons on the flat floor and 492 on the sloping floor.
Thirdly, for musical concerts, the flat floor will confortably accommo- date 530 numbered seats which, to- gether with those on the sloping floor. gives a total seating accommodation of 1,024. In addition, there are two VIP boxes near the stage.
The hall is fully equipped with a public address system and tape re- cording facilities, controlled from a sound control room which, together with an adjacent film projection and rewinding room, is located at the back of the auditorium. Also provided are flexible positions for 70 micro- phones and 600 wireless receivers for simultaneous translation services.
The six-channel translation services are controlled from sound-proof translators' booths on the left side of the hall while, on the right, there are radio and television commentary boxes.
Carpeting, auditorium chairs and conference tables were all part of the general architectural design and were made specially for the hall. To avoid monotony, the colour of the seat upholstery in the raked portion of the auditorium is varied in such a way as to present a pleasing overall pat- tern when viewed from the floor of the hall. Bright flame-coloured car- pets contrast effectively with hard- wood wall panelling.
The question of acoustics in the conference hall was given special con- sideration from the start and, to en- sure that the hall would be at least comparable to any others of its type throughout the world, an internation- ally-known firm of acoustical consult- ants, Bolt, Beranek and Newman, was called in. The main objectives were clarity and even distribution of sound and, to this end, all loudspeaker posi- tions were carefully planned.
Delegates Offices
Air-conditioned offices and secre- tarial accommodation for interna- tional conference delegates are locat- ed on the first floor immediately be- low the main conference hall. Also provided are a registration room, cable and telephone room, press room and lounge for the delegates.
The entire area is paved in p.v.c. and has an acoustic tile ceiling. Ad- ministrative offices for the conference hall are also located in this part of the building, and the ancillary rooms are on the ground floor below.
A PABX telephone system is ins- talled for the whole building with eight exchange lines in the first ins- tance. Additional public telephones are provided outside the first floor offices adjacent to the concourse area.
