line crosses the site and, in fact, puts severe restrictions on the use of a 40 m wide strip along one side. From the main intake near the entrance gate, underground cables will carry the high- voltage supply to four sub-stations; from these the medium-voltage supply will be taken either underground or in covered ways to the various buildings.
Air-conditioning within the build- ings will be designed to maintain an inside condition not higher than 24,5 degrees C dry bulb and 55 per cent. relative humidity when the outside condition is 36 degrees C dry bulb and 28,3 degrees C wet bulb. Conditioned fresh air will be supplied at a rate of approximately 2 litres/s m2. The cen- tral refrigeration plant, housed in the campus services' complex, will deliver

chilled water to the buildings, at a flow temperature of 7,2 degrees C under full load.
Structural design
The site is covered by 10 m of soft clay, of which the top 1-1,5 m is desiccated; below this soft clay are al- ternate layers of stiff clay and com- pact sand. It is proposed that, for the foundations and ground floors, all columns shall be carried on precast concrete piles founded on the first of the layers of sand.
Ground-floor construction will consist of reinforced concrete slab, carried directly on the ground, which will be of suspended construction only where loadings are such that piles are required. To allow small movements of
the ground slabs, these will be separat- ed from the main structures but will be tied-in to ensure stability.

For the superstructures it is pro- posed to use reinforced concrete framed construction throughout the entire project with the exception of small areas of building of minor im- portance because of the movement of the subsoil and the poor quality of load-bearing wall construction. Roof construction will be corrugated asbes- tos cement, spanning 1,5 m on to tim- ber purlins, with sloping secondary beams at 4 m centres spanning on to main beams and on to columns at 4 and 8 m centres.
This construction will not, how- ever, be used for the hydraulics labora- tory in the civil engineering building, which has steel main and secondary trusses spanning to give a clear build- ing size of 30 x 60 m; with a 3 m over- hang to north and south and 2 m to west.
Buildings will be surrounded by pavement which will tend to make the whole area impermeable. This will limit the seasonal movement of mois- ture from under the buildings, thereby reducing the problems of differential settlement. Cut-off walls to control the moisture movement will be includ- ed to the perimeter of the foundations where large planting is required.
Cost
Cost of the first phase, excluding equipment and fees is estimated at US$3.9 million. This is made up as follows:
