While prefabricated methods of cons- truction were introduced in the Philip- pines more than ten years ago, their use has been very limited so far as low cost housing is concerned. Now the People's Homesite and Housing Corporation, a na- tional office, has embarked on its first scheme employing precast units on a large scale.
C
HARGED
with the provision of housing accommodation for the fast-growing Filipino population, the People's Homesite and Housing Cor- poration, after 28 years of existence, is a long way from fulfilling its re- quirements.
To date the Corporation has built about 12,000 family units, distributed all over the country. The need to ac- celerate as well as to expand this pro- gramme is apparent and the Corpora- tion's staff has recently been studying the use of prefabricated construction as a means to quicker completions.
Following this study, the Corpora- tion is now engaged on a scheme which entails the first bulk use of pre- fabricated units.
The site is at Zabarte, within the boundaries of Caloocan and Quezon Cities. It is about 17 kilometres from central Manila. Initially some 599 dwellings are proposed.
Two Plans
Two types of single family dwel- ling units are proposed, each occupy- ing a site of 200 sq. metres. They are the type 2-BS and the type 3-BS. The 2-BS is a single-storey dwelling with a good-sized living room, a din- ing room, kitchen, two adjacent bed- rooms and a front terrace. The area of the home is 44.45 sq. metres or 478 sq. ft.
