* Approved by Special Warrant during the year.

With the continuing expansion of estates one Executive Grade Officer is required to relieve the Resettlement Officer, Estates, of some of his administrative duties. 27 posts were approved by Special Warrant to set up a new Works Section responsible for the maintenance of both estates and cottage areas. This reorganization has made it possible for 1 post of Assistant Resettlement Officer, 6 posts of Area Officer. 1 post of Construction Officer, 2 posts of Artisan Class I, 4 posts of Artisan Class II and 1 post of Resettle- ment Labourer to be deleted. The 3 Health Inspectors will continue to be attached to the estates and cottage areas but these posts will be transferred to the Urban Services Department which will exercise necessary supervision and provide reliefs when required. The post of Relieving Officer has been deleted and the establishment of Assistant Resettlement Officers increased by one officer in lieu. 14 posts of Squatter Patrolman have been deleted and replaced by additional posts of Watchman. The remaining new posts are required for normal expansion and new projects.

Under Other Charges Annually Recurrent the increased expenditure of $283,200 is mainly due to the fact that the maintenance of multi-storey estates and cottage areas, formerly undertaken by the Public Works Department, will be carried out by the Resettlement Department under its own Maintenance Contract. Additional provision of $65,500 for rent of offices is necessitated by the removal of Resettlement Head- quarters from the Central Government Offices to Li Po Chun Chambers,

Under Special Expenditure the provision of $649,000 under subhead 8 (Development of cottage areas) includes revotes of $50,890 for works delayed through unforeseen circumstances and $598,110 for new construction works. An electrical printing machine at $4,600 is required for the Works Section Drawing Office to replace the existing obsolete sunprint frame. Provision of $4,200 is required for surveying instru- ments to equip the Surveys and Drawing Office more adequately.
