The Under Secretary of State for the Colonies,

Downing Street,

London, S.W.1.

Dear Sir,

In company with Mr. John Wallace, Vice President of the Chase National Bank and Mr. Frank Groves, Vice President of the American Express Company, I called on Mr. D.M. MacDougall, Mr. W.M. Thomson and Mr. N.L. Smith of the Hongkong Planning Unit, 2, Park Street, W.1.

The purpose of our visit was to ascertain what plans were being made to permit representatives of our respective banks to visit Hongkong as soon as the colony is liberated

The Hongkong branch of this Bank has been established there for over forty years. Owing to the many problems which have arisen out of the occupation by the Japane se, we feel that it is necessary for representatives of our Bank to visit the place as soon as it is possible to do so in order to see that our interests are fully protected. I have in particular to request that the same facilities and privileges be accorded this Bank as are accorded to the representatives of any other banks, regardless of

nationality.

I shall be glad if you will advise me in due course where and when our representatives should present them- selves in order to be ready to return to Hongkong.

Thanking you in anticipation of your courtesy, I am

Yours faithfully,

(Sgd.) CARL W. HAYDEN Supervisor of London Branches.
