Dear Clarke.

20 NOV 1939

The War Office,

Whitehall,

S.W.1.

19 November, 1939.

In reply to your letter to Steel dated 18th November, 1939. The answers to the questions in the cable

are:-

1. (a) Shanghai 1350 all ranks.

(b) Tientsin 4 officers and 130 other ranks.

(c) Peking 1 officer and 40 other ranks.

These figures are only approximate, because we cannot say from here how many administrative personnel the G.O.C. will eventually decide are necessary.

2. (b) and (c) by about 14th December, 1939.

30

(a) above by the end of December, 1939, i.e. the

battalion from North China will sail from Shanghai for its new destination at that time.

3. Approximately the same numbers are expected to be maintained for the duration of the war. It is impossible to say now what is to happen afterwards.

fours sincerely

H.A. Clarke, Esq.

Foreign Office,

S.W.1.

Rtthard Hamilton.
