The institutions with the largest numbers of Chinese
students are the London School of Economics, Imperial College,
University College and Queen Mary College. As regards the
London School of Economics no decision has yet been reached re-
garding the University or College which will receive its evacuated
students and it is doubtful whether accommodation can be made
available for the large number of students studying in that School
at any one of the receiving institutions in England and Wales.
The difficulty is further enhanced by the fact that plans are
afoot for the partial conversion of the London School of Economics
into a centre for specialised economic research in the event of

Several of the University of London institutions raise the general question of the position of foreign students and it seems desirable that some lead should be given to these institu- tions regarding the preference, if any, to be given to Chinese students. I should be glad to know whether the Foreign Office would be prepared to go so far as to make a general statement to the effect that Chinese students of the University of London should be placed in the matter of evacuation plans in a preferen- tial position vis-à-vis other foreign students.
