// October, 1939.
I am commanded by the Army Council to forward for
the information of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs,
the attached copy of correspondence and Court of Enquiry,
relating to an injury sustained by No. 4451820, Private S.Lant,
1st Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, at Peking, and to
state that the Council do not consider that this is a case
in which any claim should be made against the Japanese
Government for hospital or other expenses arising in
consequence of the incident. If Viscount Halifax concurs,
he will no doubt wish to inform the Embassy at Peking
accordingly and to ask them at the same time to thank the
Japanese for their offer to contribute towards the medical
expenses.
The Under Secretary of State,
The Foreign Office,
Whitehall, S.W.1.
