During last two days local Chinese police have been actively conducting searches of Chinese at various points on main thoroughfares of city including those under Chinese police control alongside perimeter of legation quarter.

2. Certain of these points are placed so as to control Chinese traffic in and out of quarter but so far searches have been conducted without infringing quarter's jurisdiction. 3. Object of search is presumably old notes, and possibly

also arms.

4. Repeated to Foreign Office No.49 Saving, Tientsin,

and Tokyo.
