Java (Nivas) quotations remained unchanged until the 28th

when they announced that owing to competition in India from European

refined sugars, they were reducing quotations to all Far Eastern

destinations by f.0.50 per 100 kilos.

As a result of Nivas' limits remaining stationary for the

greater part of the month, fair quantities which had been bought on the

rising market in December, were resold to Java. The reduction of

f.0.50 per 100 kilos mentioned above caused a slump in prices, and little

business has been done since.

Local dealers bought little refined sugar, but fair quantities

were sold to Ningpo and Tientsin, while shipments to Malaya and Southern

destinations, though somewhat less than in December, were steady.

Macao, whence smuggling is said to be increasing again, and to Ningpo.

TIN REFINING.

Approximately 50 tons of tin was refined in local refineries

during the week ended 10th February.
