VI. THE FUTURE.
The Ministry of Home Security ask for a decision from the Committee on the steps which are to be taken in future on smoke production. There appears to be three alternatives
(a) to cease smoke production;
(b) to continue with normal expansion;
(c) to continue with an accelerated programme,
23. If it is decided to continue with normal expansion the suggested programme is
Oil burning generators
(a) to continue smoke protection schemes at the vital points at which schemes were operated during December introducing such modifications in operational technique as are shown to be necessary from time to time by the experience gained during the operation of the Northern Ireland experimental scheme;
(b) to organise training in smoke duties, in
consultation with officers commanding smoke companies, to improve operational efficiency especially in respect of flaring.
(c) to use the new generators, which are coming
forward under the present 100,000 order at the rate of 7,500 a week, to organise new schemes as follows:
January 2 (4 vital targets)
February - March

(a) to continue the Northern Ireland experimental scheme to obtain further data from aerial observation under carying meteorological conditions - particularly in regard to -

The War Office have now reported (see C.0.S.(40) 1063) that they are unable to provide the smoke companies for which the Ministry have asked to operate the January schemes, In view of this it will not be possible to carry out the January programme in full.
