sites,

66 Eight sites have been sele.ted for oil fire decoys for the Petroleum Board, Land is being requisitioned and instructions regarding the method of construction of the decoys have been issṛed For the information of the firms concerned,

The original list submitted by the Petroleum Department contained only 9 decoys as it was considered that the location of the majority of the tank farms in towns rendered impracticable the finding of other suitable decoys. One site in this list has yet to be located and the Petroloum Department have been asked to reconsider their policy and re-examine the possibility of having further decoys.

Ten sites for Naval Oil Fire Decoys have been found, of which two coincide with those of the Petroleum Depart- mente The majority of the Naval sites have still to be checked before they are accepted.

Hasty

There has been considerable difficulty in deter- mining the best method of construction of oil fire decoys. All technical experience has, hitherto, naturally been concentrated on measures to avoid oil fires and no definite knowledge was available on the subject of how to make them. All the experts, in fact, had different opinions regarding the type of fire, the type of oil to be used, whether or not it should float on water, and what form the container to carry the fire should take. experiments had, therefore, to be made, and the instructions that have been issued are based on these experiments. appears that the consumption of oil is very high, which not only means an expensive fire but adds considerably to the task of transporting the oil to the sites which are almost invariably very difficult of access. Further experiments are therefore being carried out in an endeavour to obtain more exact figures of consumption and to design a less expensive fire.

It

In the meantime, however, it is considered that the present method of construction will permit of an effective, if extravagant, fire,

It is expected that the control of oil fire decoys will present peculiar difficulties.

The Ministry of Home Security have provided a priority list of areas of key points requiring decoy protection, For various reasons some deviation from the exact priority has been unavoidable but this will be adjusted as soon as possible. Up to date, sites have been found in the Bristol Avonmouth and the Teeside areas. A survey for sites is continuing in the Birmingham, Redditch, Kidderminster, Walsall and South Wales areas.

From the experiments carried out at Sheffield, three types of decoys have been evolved and further experiments are being conducted to add to and improve upon these types.

It is necessary to produce definite types which can be varied in detail since, owing to supply difficulties, it is essential that materials, especially such components
