a hundred thousand L. of C. personnel details. These men should be run off at ten thousand a night at least. Let me see a plan and time-table for this with priorities both of units and of stores in order to save the most valuable elements.

The possibility of holding the Cherbourg bridgehead should by now have been thoroughly explored. Obviously this should be done in the first instance by the French as we could not denude this country
of the anti-aircraft guns etc. which would be required. I think it unlikely that this plan will come to anything, but there is no harm in seeing clearly what is involved in it, and for this purpose Staff study is required.
