Nogues
Have seen Nogues and the local Admiral.. says scheme is to be carried out by navy and he has only to provide troops. Scheme arranged by Navy with following troops under a general officer is as follows:-
Troops 4 battalions infantry 1 squadron machine guns on motors 1 company (. light tanks) 1 groupe mountain artillery.
The operation is as follows:
(a)
After appeal of Spanish Government a liaison Mission of officers will be sent forthwith in a fast warship to Balearic Islands.
(b) On evening of 2nd day 3 battalions will leave and should arrive 5 a.m. on 3rd day.
( ၁ )
On morning of 3rd day remainder of the force leave and should arrive at 5 a.m. on 4th day.
Escort for convoys will be provided by French Navy.
>
General Nogues made clear that he personally did not believe in the schome as Balearic Islands are full of troops commanded by a very pro fascist General, Either this General will put up a pretence only of opposing Italians in which case French troops would be merely fodder for Italians or he will come into the opon, when it would be a question of sending a much bigger force to fight him, Spanish General, not necessarily the Spanish people.
