Letter from the Boers,
Sungin, May 1, 1884. "We have the honour to inform you that Dinizulu, the successor to the throne of Zululand, has, in consequence of the continual shedding of blood within his territory, taken his refuge to us, with the desire to see peace and quietness restored to his country.
"We have not come to wage war; our object is to restore and maintain peace in Zululand.
"We hereby inform you that Dinizulu is at present amongst us, and that we are on the way to Mahlabatine.

We advise you to lay down your arms with- out further delay, and to conduct yourselves in a quiet and peaceable manner, and quickly to recall your commando.
"
We on our part promise to prevent further bloodshed.
To Captain Usibebu a letter of similar pur- port has been sent. Captain Ummamane has also received orders to lay down his arms without further delay, and to maintain peace and order. "The Committee of Dinizulu's Volunteers-

First agreement between the Boers and Zulus.
Zululand, Ingomo Raud, May 2
To all whom it may concern, be it by this known, that I, Dinizulu, King of the Zulu nation and of Zululand, with the advice of my principal coun- sellors and headmen, who, together with me, signed this deed on the one hand, and Messrs. D. C. Uys, C. F. Meyer, P. R. Spies, A. M. Laas, J. F. Staden, J. C. Stienkamp, P. J. Fourie, F. J. de Jager, and their secretary, as principal leaders of Boers on the other hand, on this day have agreed as follows:-The before-mentioned principal leaders of the Boers bind themselves and agree to assist with advice and deed to restore peace, law, and order in the territory of the Zulu nation, and to carry out the lawful rule of the Zulu nation, and as much as possible to settle all disputes amongst the Zulu nation, and to promote peace, and even when all measures for friendly settlement have failed, and then at the head of
