Safeguarding of Industries.

2. The Cabinet resumed a discussion which had

been begun at the end of their previous Meeting in regard to their future industrial and trade policy, including safeguarding of industries and the steel and iron industry.

After a discussion in which every member took

part, the Cabinet agreed

(a) That their policy should be based on the following principles:-

(1) No change of policy in regard

to food taxes or the imposition

of a general tariff.

(ii) To profit by the experience

already gained in the working of the Safeguarding of Indus- tries het in order to introduce such simplification of procedure as might be deemed advisable after the expiration of the present Parliament.

(iii) No industry to be excluded from an Inquiry under the Safeguard- ing of Industries Procedure after the expiration of the present Parliament.

(b) That the Prime Minister should write

& letter to the Chief Whip, for publi- cation in next Sunday's newspapers, in which he would refer to the various rumours of changes in the Government's fiscal policy and would set forth the above principles in appropriate language.
