CABINET ARRANGE. ENTS DURING

THE RECESS.

(Previous

Reference: Cabinet 39 (28) Con- clusion 7).

As the result of a short discussion,

the following arrangements were made for the

conduct of Cabinet business during the Recess :-

(1) The Prime Minister himself would be

absent abroad from August 11th to

September 20th, but would be within

telephonic communication through the

Paris Embassy.

(ii) From August 11th until August 26th

the Secretary of State for Foreign

Affairs would be in immediate charge

of the Foreign Office and would be

available to act for the Prime Minister

in a matter of urgency, consulting him

by telephone if necessary.

(iii) From August 27th to September 7th, that

is to say during the absence abroad

both of the Prime Minister and the

Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs,

the Lord President of the Council would

be in charge of the Foreign Office and

would be available to act for the Prime

Minister as mentioned in (ii).

(iv)

If desired by the Lord President of the

Council, the Secretary of State for

India would be available to take over

these duties from September 7th until

the Prime Minister's return.

(v) The following Ministers, in reply to

enquiries by the Prime Minister, stated

that they would be in Great Britain

during the Recess :-
