CHAPTER IV.
round the south side of Mount Nicholson, which is at present under construction. Victoria can be reached by a road running from Magazine Gap to the tram station. A rough track also descends from Middle Gap to Little Hong Kong. This section is in telephonic communication with headquarters from the Sanitarium. Communication with neighbouring sections will require establishing by means of patrols and signalling parties.
8. Supplies. Rations will be sent out daily from the Victoria main depôt, and will be carried by coolie labour. A ration sub-depôt will be formed under shelter on the north side of Magazine Gap, where seven days' reserve rations will be stored. Water can be obtained from hydrants and mountain streams, the outposts being supplied by coolie labour.
9. Ammunition.-Gun ammunition at the rate of 200 rounds per gun is issued, and the reserve will be stored in the field magazine.
1st Reserve small-arm ammunition, 100 rounds per rifle, will be in regimental charge.
2nd Reserve, 200 rounds per rifle, in Ordnance charge in the field magazine. Maxim guns have 11,000 rounds per gun issued, of which 6,000 rounds will be in ordnance charge.
Infantry carry 100 rounds per rifle in their pouches, other branches 50 rounds. 10. Field Magazine.—A field magazine will be established under shelter on the north side of Magazine Gap, in combination with the ration sub-depôt.
11. Dressing Station. A dressing station will be formed at the Sanitarium, where mild cases will be treated. More serious cases will be sent to the Victoria Base Hospital, as the medical officer directs.
12. Modes of Attack. The probable forms of attack on this section are follows:-
as
(1.) By a landing of troops in Deep Water Bay, and an attack to secure Middle Gap.
(2.) By a landing of troops in Aberdeen Bay and an attack along the Aberdeen- Mount Kellett and the Aberdeen-Wanchai Gap roads.
(3.) A sudden raid to cut the cable in Deep Water Bay.
The guard at the Aberdeen Docks and the outposts protecting the cable at Deep Water Bay would give timely warning of an enemy's intention to land troops in either of these bays. Patrols, especially at night, must be sent out along the roads indicated. 13. Works. The following works will require construction on mobilization :---
(1.) Emplacements and epaulements for guns at Mount Kellett and Mount Cameron.
(2.) A road from Middle Gap to the south spur of Mount Cameron for the moving of howitzers into position.
(3.) Shelter trenches for the infantry outposts.
(4.) A field magazine.
14. Camp Equipment, Ammunition, and Intrenching Tools.-
