howitzers (H 2), supplemented by distant fire from the three Wong-nei- Cheong howitzers (H 3).

These might be supported on the right by the infantry of No. 5 Section moving to their left, and on the left by the company from No. 8 Section, and (according to circumstances) by the whole Victoria and Kowloon Reserves, which would move by the Victoria and Magazine Gap Roads, and even possibly by one and a-half companies from Stonecutter's.

If necessitated by overwhelming numbers, the second line indicated in the map would be taken up by the reinforcements, and the sectional troops would retire on it.

Total troops concentrated-

6 Howitzers, 6 "6".

14 7-pr. mountain guns.

12 Maxim guns.

5 companies European infantry.

4 companies Indian infantry.

Landing on South-east (Deep Water Bay)-A threatened landing in Deep Water Bay or Repulse Bay would he met by the troops of No. 8 Section, supported by the three howitzers there (H3), as well by the three howitzers near Aberdeen (H 2) and the half-battery 9-pr. guns placed at the head of the Deep Water Bay Valley.

These troops would be supported on their right by the troops of No. 7 Section, and probably also No. 6 Section, and in rear by half a company from Tytam Valley, and could be soon reinforced by the whole Victoria Reserve, and, if necessary, by the reserved troops from Kowloon. A further reinforcement of one and a-half companies Asiatic infantry might be obtained in about two hours from Stonecutter's.

Total troops concentrated-

6 Howitzers.

3 9-pr. field guns.

14 7-pr. field guns.

12 Maxim guns.

4 companies European infantry.

44 companies Indian infantry.

Landing on South-east (Stanley or Tytam Bay).-In the event of a force landing in Stanley or Tytam Bay (which are too distant to be defended) its advance towards Victoria by Tytam Took would be met by a concentration of troops on the strong position near Tytam Reservoir.

This position, at first occupied by only one company Indian infantry, could be reinforced by the Victoria Reserve, Kowloon Reserve, one and a-half com- panies Indian infantry from Stonecutter's, and probably the European infantry from No. 6 Section.

The hostile column might also be taken in flank by the advance of two companies with four Gardner guns from Lyemun by Tytam Gap.

Troops that may possibly be concentrated or engaged in defence

according to circumstances-

14 7-prs.

4 Gardner guns.

12 Maxim guns.

4 companies European infantry.

5 companies Indian infantry.

Attack from the North.--It is considered possible that a small force might be landed in Mirs Bay and sent over the hills north of Kowloon in connection with naval attacks on the harbour entrances, with a view to seize the hills which command the Kowloon Forts at from 1,200 to 1,800 yards range.

This would be met immediately by the troops of No. 12 Section having the support of four block-houses and other works which will be thrown up.

These would be quickly reinforced by the infantry and guns of the Kowloon Reserve, and possibly by the Victoria Reserve.
