(D.)-Modes of meeting various Attacks.

East or West Entrance.-Attacks on the Eastern or Western Entrances will be met by the guns of the forts, and by the mines, supplemented by the sectional infantry.

If the attack is on one entrance only, reinforcements of gunners might be obtained from the other, but only at the risk of that other being attacked at a disadvantage during their absence.

Landing on East.-If an attack on the Eastern Entrance is supplemented by a landing of troops in Sywan Bay or on the eastern coast, the sectional troops can be reinforced by the whole of the Victoria and Kowloon Reserves, viz.

Victoria Reserve-

1 battery 7-pr. Royal Artillery.

1 battery 7-pr. Volunteers.

3 companies (Maxim gun), 12 guns.

2 companies European infantry.

Kowloon Reserve—

This would be met in the first instance by the troops of Nos. 4 and 5 Sections with the three howitzers at H, and the three 9-prs. of the former section, supported on the left by distant fire from the Aberdeen and Wong- nei-Cheong batteries (H 2 and H 3).

These would be quickly reinforced by the infantry company from No. 6 Section, the quick-firing and machine-guns from Belcher's, with the half company European infantry from that section, and the whole Victoria Reserve, as well as, if necessary, the Kowloon Reserve, which would move either by the main road by Belcher's to Sandy Bay, or by Victoria Gap to Pokfulum, or both, as might be required.

In the event of the landings being covered by an overwhelming fire from ships, the reinforcements would occupy the second lines as indicated in the map, and the advanced troops would retire on them.

Reinforcements might be quickly obtained of the whole Kowloon Reserve, and, say, one company European infantry and one company of Maxim guns from Victoria Reserve.
