The Sanitarium Section, by the road leading from Aberdeen to Victoria by the Wanchai and Magazine Gaps.

The Wong-nei-Cheong Section, by the two roads crossing the Wong-nei- Cheong Gap from Little Hong Kong and Tytam Took respectively; also by the road leading direct from Tytam Reservoir to Quarry Bay.

In

many cases the communication by pathways from one part of a section to another requires to be supplemented; these will be described in detail under the Sectional Heads in Chapter IV.

Means of Communication by Telegraph, Telephone, Visual Signalling, &c.

The map and diagram, Schedule IV,* shows the system of communication by telegraph, telephone, and visual signals.

Telegraphs.-The line of military telegraphs is complete from the head- quarter offices to Belcher's Battery on the west, and to Lyemun on the east. From near North Point a submarine line is laid to Kowloon Dock, whence the line proceeds by Kowloon West to Stonecutter's West, passing under the channel from the Cosmopolitan Dock to the east end of Stonecutter's Island.

Stations are permanently opened at-

Head-quarter Office.

Lower Belcher's.

Lyemun Barracks.

Whitfield Barracks, Kowloon,

Stonecutter's West Battery.

On mobilization, stations will also be opened at—

North Point.

Kowloon Dock.

Colonial Government telephone lines exist from the Central Police Station to the Police Stations at Chim-sa-tsui, Yaumati, Mount Gough, Pokfulum, Aberdeen, Stanley, and Shankinan, also to Victoria Peak and Cape D'Aguilar, which would also be utilized for conveying intelligence from the front.

Telephones.-Telephonic communication is, on mobilization, opened from the following telegraphic stations, namely:-

From Head-quarter Office to Head-quarter House.

From Lower Belcher's to Upper Belcher's.

Central Battery. East Battery.

Telephonic communication will also be established between the Head- quarter Office and the Central Police Station.

Visual Signalling.-A system of visual signalling is established connecting the Southern and South-eastern Sections with each other, and with the Belcher end of the telegraph on the one side, and Scandal Point, close to Head-quarter House, on the other; communication being also arranged with the "Victor Emanuel" and with the Whitfield Barracks at Kowloon,

The stations are fixed at an elevation which, while being below the fog level, and, therefore, rendering them at nearly all times visible from one another, are sufficiently high above the sea to afford a clear view of the lower slopes, and the sea beyond, and, at the same time, are near to the head-quarters of the several sections in which they are situated.

In most cases the stations are protected from the weather and from attack by block-houses, which are described in detail in Chapter III.

A Table summarizing the signalling system is annexed (Schedule III).
