Coolies for carrying the dhoolies and stretchers mentioned in the Schedule of Equipment will be indented for as required.

Modes of Attack. The attack to be feared is in the form of a landing in Sandy or Taihowan Bays covered by fire from ships.

The howitzers should be able to prevent the ships coming to anchor, or even to slacken their speed sufficiently to transfer the landing party to their boats.

In this they would be assisted by the three 9-pr. guns, and probably by the naval gun-boats, &c.

The infantry should be distributed in the first place within effective. musketry range of the shore, and should only retire on the stronger position on the level of the main road if the hostile naval force has great superiority of fire. The troops in Section V should co-operate in opposing a landing in Taikowan Bay.

Additional Works.-The works to be executed by the troops are :-

1. The howitzer battery for three 8-inch guns, if not previously erected. 2. A field magazine for ditto.

3. Epaulments for the three 9-pr. field guns near neck on Pokfulum Road. 4. The block-house B 1 on spur of Mount Davis.

5. Infantry entrenchments on 1st line round Bisnay Villa and on lower slope of Mount Davis, and in Taihowan Bay.

6. Epaulments for guns in second line to command Taihowan and Sandy Bays.

7. Infantry entrenchments in second line to form strong entrenched line from Mount Davis to High West across the Gap on Pokfulum Road, including enclosed work on Mount Davis.

Nos. 6 and 7 will, in the first instance, be carried out by contract labour, by which also all materials for the works will be brought up. Mat-sheds will also be erected by contract labour for the accommodation of the troops to replace the tents first taken into use.

The following is a rough estimate of the order in which the works should be executed, the strength of working parties required, and the time taken in execution :-
