commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to state, for the information of the Army Council, that before concurring in the suggestion to refer this report to the Colonial Defence Committee they desire to take an opportunity of conferring with Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge, G.C.B., the late Commander-in-Chief on the China station, who has just arrived in this country, with regard to certain points which are not made quite clear in the report, notably the basis on which the estimate of numbers of naval sick and wounded furnished to the Conference was arrived at.

No. 3. Admiralty to War Office.

I am, &c. (Signed) C. 1. THOMAS.

(Confidential. No. M. 0692.) Sir,

Admiralty, June 1, 1904. WITH reference to Admiralty letter M. 0602 of the 12th instant, and to your letter 4828/7/216 I (1), of the 25th April, on the subject of provision to be made at Hong Kong for a large number of sick and wounded in the event of war, I am to request you will inform the Army Council that my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty consider the estimate enclosed in your letter above quoted to be in excess of probable requirements, so far as the Navy is concerned, and that they concur in referring the matter to the Colonial Defence Committee on the understanding that provision for 1,000 naval sick and wounded would be sufficient.

I am, &c.

(Signed)

C. I. THOMAS
