8. Entry to Forts.-No one will be admitted to any fort or building by night who is unable to give the countersign.
9. Look-out at B.C's. Post.-A look-out will be on duty at the B.C. post by day and night.
His duty will be to report at once to the officer any vessel of unusual appearance approaching the harbour. He will also keep up the log book, in which should be entered the name, type, nationality, time of entering or of leaving the harbour of
every vessel.
10. P.F. Specialists' and Telephonists' Duties.-P.F. specialists and telephonists are entirely responsible for the safeguarding of their instruments. They are not required for guard duties.
The signallers at the B.C. post (Stonecutters) must remain in communication (with the assistance of the look-outs) with the signallers at the F.C. post. Telephonists should employ a private code signal to prevent any chance of the instruments being used by the enemy for their own purposes.
11. Preparation for Action.-The guns will at all times be kept ready for action, and a sufficient amount of ammunition should therefore be brought up from the magazines and placed in the cartridge and shell recesses, but shell will not be fuzed unless an attack is imminent.
12. Daily Drill. Battery mannings should be daily practised, and men and officers practised in the scheme of defence of the command. The command communica- tions both by signal and telephone should be tested daily.
13. Reports to F.C.-The following subjects will be put in the form of a short report and submitted through you to the F.C. daily :--
(a.) State of communication by telephone throughout the island and between the
island and the F.C. post.
(b.) Any deficiencies of any sort which it is necessary to bring forward.
(c.) Progress of further improving defences of forts and P.F. cells, &c., as laid down
in Defence Scheme and fighting books.
14. Maxims. You will make arrangements to hand over to the O.C. infantry those Maxims which you hold on charge for them, together with such ammunition as may be required.
15. Movable Armament Guns.-You will move 4-15-prs. Q.F. guns with filled limbers (with a complement of 50 rounds per piece, including that in the limbers) to the mobilization positions, Eagle's Nest and Customs Pass on the mainland. You will furnish a sufficient guard for these guns by night.
16. Ordnance Stores.-You will arrange for all stores to be drawn from ordnance as laid down in paragraph 8, Chapter III (J), of Mobilization Stores Defence Scheme, copies of vouchers being held by you.
17. Copy of Orders in Fort Record Books. A copy of these instructions should be placed in the fort record books of all batteries, and should there be any local considera- tions which have not been dealt with herein (Examination Services, &c.), full instruc- tions should be added in the fort record books of the battery concerned to meet them.
18. R.E. Infantry, R.A.M.C-The following reports on arrival and during mobilization will be sent to me by infantry, R.E. and R.A.M.C. details :-
(1.) Arrival Report (R. E. and infantry).
(2.) Daily State (R.E. and infantry).
You will make the necessary arrangements for the accommodation (in barracks only) of the above details.
You will furnish to the O.C. infantry detachment with the following information as to his positions for night duty:
(u.) 2 n.c.os. and 12 men at Engine House, near Albion Battery, furnishing
