27. Look-outs on Guns. Half the R.A. relief will be accommodated close to the guns by night in temporary shelters, the remainder will sleep in their casemates or tents in the vicinity, and be ready to turn out instantly on alarm.

An armed sentry

will be posted from the relief on duty to patrol the rear of the battery by night.

28. Lights. Lights must be ready for gun emplacements of 6-in. batteries; magazines need not be kept lighted, since the supply of ammunition must be from the recesses, which should be filled.

29. Pottinger Battery to open Fire on Hostile Vessel.Any information received by the selected battery (Pottinger) from the P.W.S.S. should be at once transmitted to the F.C. post. This battery should fire on its own responsibility on any hostile vessel appearing in the waters south of Tung Lung Island, a report being at once sent to the F.C. by telephone.

30. Movable Armament Guns. You will take immediate steps to increase the amount of ammunition for each of the movable armament guns to 100 rounds per piece.

31. Communication from Collinson Look-out. The look-out post at Cape Collinson is in telephonic communication with the F.C. post through headquarters exchange and with Pakshawan by alarm circuit.

32. Look-outs, Report to F.C. any Ships sighted.-1 look-out will be posted from sunrise to sunset. After sunset or when there is a fog 2 look-outs will be posted. The look-out will report at once to the F.C. all ships of any kind observed, giving a description of each vessel, with its position when observed and its apparent course. Look-outs will be posted every two hours.

At night and in foggy weather, should any boat or vessel be observed by the look- outs attempting to enter the harbour, the alarm will be given and a description of the vessel or vessels sent to the F.Cs. as soon as possible.

33. Look-out's Diary.-A complete diary should be kept of all occurrences by the n.c.o. in charge.

34. Diary for each Work.--The senior of each battery will keep a diary showing the time and a short description of any important event, such as the times when sentries are relieved, alarms given, apparent damage to the enemy by fire, expenditure of ammunition, &c.

35. Reserve. The R.A. reserve will be situated at Lyemun Barracks and Devil's Peak. It should be noted that their special duty is the supply of ammunition.

36. Copy of Instructions in Fort Record Books and F.C. Post.-A copy of these instructions should be placed in the fort record books of all batteries and at the F.C. post. Those portions of the instructions concerning particular batteries should also be abstracted and put into fighting books. Should there be any local considerations which have not been dealt with herein, full instructions should be added in the fort record book to meet them (ie., Examination Services, &c.).

37. R.E. Infantry and R.A.M.C. For purposes of administration, all details of the R.E., R.A.M.C., &c., allotted to the Eastern Fire Command will be attached to you and will render the following reports during mobilization:-

(1.) Daily state

(2.) Sick report

R.E. and R.A.M.C. R.A.M.C.

You will make the necessary arrangements for the accommodation (in barracks only) for the above details.

You will arrange with the O.C. R.A.M.C. detachment details concerning time and place for seeing sick, &c.
