位於筲箕灣道(英皇道)丶明園西街以東的名園遊樂場,攝於
1918年剛開業時。
名園遊樂場內有酒店、飲食場所及表演場地,不少人在此舉辦西式或集體婚禮。該遊樂場亦開辦
一條前往「塘西風月區」的巴士路線。可是自

23年起,名園頻頻倒閉和易手經營,到了
1936年正式
結束營業。其背後的山段亦被稱為名園山。

H嚴重雨災期間的明園西街。
從名園山上賽西湖水塘滿溢的洪水,將停泊於明園西街的汽車沖至七歪八倒,蠱成一堆。

1960年的新麗池花園大廈,大廈部分為酒店,內設泳池,為當時高消費逵興場所。
麗池花園大廈前身是位於鰂魚涌的麗池游泳場,在
1940年開業,場內有泳池及露天泳棚,和平後
加設舞龐和夜總會,並曾舉辦多屆「香港小姐」選舉。

鰂魚涌,約
1935年。
右方的筲箕灣道約兩年後改名為英皇道。可見於

2年興建的太古糖廠及漆廠羣,所在現為太古
坊等商業樓宇。左中部為位於鰂魚涌角於
1907年落成的太古船塢。
1973年,太古船塢與黃埔船場合
併,並遷往青衣,船塢原址闢建為商住樓宇羣太古城。

當時仍為-漁村小鎮式街道,有多間傳統糧油店和金舖,當中以天天及泰盛金舖較為知名,現時
仍有一間位於左方超級市場隔鄰的漢和。由
1990年起,筲箕灣東大街逐漸變為美食店舖雲集的「食

繭言
電車於
1904年開始通車,路線由堅尼地
城至筲箕灣,並有一條支線進入跑馬地。進入
跑馬地的道路早期是天樂里,

930年代為堅拿
道,到了
1
951年再改為波斯富街。
東區的電車路線早期經電氣道,由該處至
筲箕灣原本是單軌路,需設「避車處」。到了
1
936年由電氣道改為英皇道,大部分路段亦改
為雙軌。
筲箕灣終點站早期位於筲箕灣道與工廠街
交界,

0年代延長至筲箕灣東大街口。
而堅尼地城的總站,早期位於菜市場前的
加多近街,隨即轉入滿佈工廠、貨倉及船廠的
吉席街和堅彌地城海旁。
石塘咀總站前的山道、德輔道西和皇后大
道西,直到
1930年代中為「城開不夜」的塘西
風月區。附近位於屈地街山邊的煤氣鼓,以及
近海的永安貨倉,曾先後發生爆炸和火災,釀
成重大傷亡。
經過由海員之家及聖彼得教堂改建落成的
新七號差館,便進入早期為鹹魚欄的海味街,
跟着是南北行街(文咸西街)與永樂街一帶的
「三角碼頭」區。過了上環街市及已消失的「平
民夜總會」(現為信德中心),電車經過找換店雲
集之急庇利街,轉入德輔道中。迄至
1970年代
初,這一帶為私娼麋集的廉價「人肉市場」。
迄至
1
960年代在熱鬧的德輔道中(電車
路),觸目所見是著名的銀龍、新光、新紀元丶
大同、金龍及中毆等酒家,以及龍記、公團丶
陸海通及奕樂園等食肆;還有永安、大新、瑞
興、先施、協昌及利源等大小百貨公司。多家
表行,加上新世界影戲院,使這一帶成為華人
的高級消費及宴飲區。
畢打街以東是銀行區,發鈔銀行有利、渣
打、滙豐及中圍銀行皆位於此。此地段亦為置
地公司的商業樓宇「王國」。
過了花園道,便進入下環的皇后大道東(現
為金鐘道),兩旁是軍營和船塢,豎有多面紅底
白字寫上「不准擅進,如敢故違,開槍射繫」的
警告牌,有「生人勿近」的恐怖感。一直到「大
佛口」看到「麗的呼聲」廣播電台,氣氛才告緩
和。

由晏頓街的「紅磚屋」(海員及海軍會所)
一直到克街油站的一段莊士敦道,有包括拍賣
行、金舖、書局、押店、茶莊及燒臘店,還有
包括龍鳳(龍門)、雙喜、英京、大成等茶樓和
酒家。加上這一帶的麗都、金城、東城、東方丶
環球及國泰等電影院,形成-個人流不絕的繁
囂市集。
軒尼詩道上亦有多家包括新亞怪魚、頤圜丶
龍圖(百樂門)及大三元等著名酒家食肆。過了
波斯富街則有包括金馬車餐廳、寶芳鞋王及商
務印書館等名店。由

960年代起,此地段逐漸
轉變為最繁盛的飲食和購物區,當中亦有多家
包括利舞台

之後,便進入避風塘(維多利亞公園)旁
的高士威道,現中央圖書館及皇仁書院一帶
的地段,早期為馬球場及皇后遊樂場。此地段
於開埠初期還未填海時,連同避風塘,為-銅
鑼型海濺,是故有「銅鑼灣」一名。高士威道

)原是設於銅鑼型海灣正中,以方便
行人往來的堤道。
電車早期經過之電氣道,名稱源自
1922年
由灣仔日街、月街、星街一帶遷至的香港電燈
公司發電廠(現為城市花園屋苑所在)。過了發
電廠,則為繁盛的「小上海」(現為「小福建」)
區域,商務印書館的廠址現為華豐圈貨及新光
戲院所在的僑冠大廈及僑輝大廈。
中華巴士的車廠於

990年代改建為港運
城,再過去是由農耕地段轉變而成的平民屋健
康村及模範邨。對開為七姊妹泳場海段,其名
稱源於早期一塊突出於水面、形如七人相擁起
的大石。因形狀亦似七人聚在一起猜枚,故
早期該區亦有「七子枚」之名。
1
880年,當局將一大片被形容為「人跡罕
至」的地段,批予太古洋行興建糖廠。該地段被
名為打石灣及鰂魚涌;稍後再批出一片位於鰂
魚涌角及黃角咀的地段,供太古洋行興建船塢。
兩者於

970年代起陸續重整和發展,由人跡罕
至的區域,演變為日夜人流不絕的住宅及商業
消費區。
與其相連的西灣河和早期稱為「餓人灣」的
筲箕灣,直到
1970年代仍不脱邊陲市集及漁港
之特色。隨後,柴灣區大力發展,東區走廊開
通,作為柴灣、石澳、大潭以至赤柱等地中轉
站的筲箕灣,亦日趨繁盛,與鰂魚涌、太古城
等一帶的熱鬧程度相比,不遑多讓。

In 1904, the trams provided services from
Kennedy To、vn
to Shau Kei \Van, with an extension
to Happy Valley (Yue Yuen). Access to Happy
Valley inilially was by way of Tin Lok Lane. In
1930, Canal Road was used for Lhe purpose and
then fina lly the extension ran through Percival
Street.
During the early services to the Eastern area,
trams ran on Electric Road using a single-track
system all the way lo Shau Kei \Van, and hence
double line laybys had to be set up at various
intervals. In 19]6, that parl of Shau Kei \Van Road
was renamed King's Road and a double-track
system was adopled.
The early lram services ended al a terminus
situated bet ween Shau Kei \Van Road and Factory
Street. In 1930, Lhe lin

Calchick Slreel and Praya Kennedy Town where
factories, godowns and small-scale ship repair
shops proliferated.
The tram service also covered the area
around Ifill Road, Des Voeux Road\,Vesl and
Queen's Road \Vest, and in the 1930's, this sector
was a flourishing brothel area known as "Shck
Tong Tsui" red lighl district and aplly dubbed
"Lhe Cily Lhal never sleeps". On May 14, 1934, a
huge explosion of a gasometer at the \Vest Point
coal gas plant (\\'11itty Street) caused quite a few
f'atalilics and a subsequent fire at the \Ving On
Godown resulted in many casualties.
The line proceeded along the tracks past the
former "Sailors' Home" and Lhe newly constructed
no. 7 Police Station which stood on the site of
the former Saint Peter's Church. Visitors can
Lhen enter Lhal parl of Des Voeux Road \Vcsl,
popularly known as "sailed fish market" which has
transformed ilselr inlo Lhe modern I present-day
"dried seafood street". Parlicipanls can go lo lhe
so-called ~am Pak Hong Slrecl, literally meaning
Soulh-norlh Trading I-longs (companies). The
area is represented by Bonham Strand \Vesl. An
important landmark of Lhe area is the so-called
Triangular Pier which is at Lhc end of \,\Ting Lok
Street. The proper name for Lhe pier is Lhe \Ving
Lok Slreel \Vharf. \Ve then make our way pasl
Lhc former \Vestern Markel and lhe long defunct
"Poor ~Ian's Nightclub" (al present-day Shun Tak

Cenlre). The working class populace visiled lo buy
cheap goods, eal inexpensive bul delicious slreel
foods and enjoyed Lhe various forms of enlerlainmenl
available. 11,e trams then trudge into Cleverly Street,
home to numerous money-changing shops. rl11e area
was quite saturated with many female street-wall<ers
tight up to the 1970's.
\\'c arc Lhcn on Des Vocux Road Cenlral
where many famous reslauranls and Lcahouscs
carried on their flourishing trade. N amcs such
as Ngun Lung, Sun Kwong, Sun Kie Yuen, Tai
Tung, Kam Lung and Chung Kwok evoke pleasanl
memories. Other famous eateries are Lung Kee,
Kung Tuen, Luk 1-loi Tung and Yik Lok Yuen.
Moreover, modern and high-class deparlmcnl
slores abounded, namely \Ving On, lhe Sun
Company, Shui Hing, Sincere, Heep Cheong and
Lay Yuen. \Vilh Lhe proliferation of watch and
jewellery shops, plus Lhc magni ficenl "\\'orld
Theatre", the area soon grew into a glittering
shopping, dining and enlerlainmenl mecca for Lhe
local populalion.

Lhe financial and
banking seclor where nole-issuing banks, i.e. Lhe
Mercanlilc Bank, lhc Charlcrcd Bank, Lhc prcsenlly
named I ISBC and Lhe Bank of' China congregaled
in Lhal seclor. The area was Lhe core of I long
Kong Land's commercial and properly empire.
Going past Garden Road, we enter
Queen's Road Easl (present-day Queensway)
in "Ha \Van". On bolh sides of this seclion

established military barracks and a naval
doclcyard with prominent warning signs erected.
The while lellering against a red background
read: "\\1ARNING -11ILITARY AREA -NO
ENTRY". The tension in the air only cases when
one approaches Dai Fut Hau and the former
Rediffusion Studio.
After Hennessy Road was built, the redbricked
"Sailors'& Soldiers' Home" was siluated
al Lhe corner of Hennessy Road and Anton Streel
(1929). Along this slretch of Johnslon Road righl
up Lo Lhe pelroleum slalion near Heard Slreel
were eslablished auclion houses, jewellery shops,
bookshops, pawn shops, Lea wholesalers and
Chinese barbecued meal shops. Reslauranls
and leahouses abounded, e.g. Lung Fung (Lung
1'1loon), Sheung I-lei (Double Happiness), Ying
King (very exclusive) and Tai Shing, plus Lhe
conglomeration of Lhealres, e.g. Lido (Landale
SLreeL), Golden Cily, Easl Town, Lhe Oriental, Lhe
Globe (1950-1971) and Calhay Thealre (1939
1984). All Lhese eslablishmenls conslilulcd Lo
creale a Lhriving, flourishing and buslling bazaar
almosphere.
Likewise, restaurants and Leahouscs
blossomed, e.g. Sun Ya Kwai Yu Restaurant, Yee
Yuen, Lung Toi (Pak Lok 1Ioon) and Tai Sam
Yuen. \\Talking past Percival Street, we come
inlo conlacl wilh Lhe former localions of famous
eslablishmenls namely, Lhe Golden Carriage
Restaurant, Po Fong Shoes Shop and lhe branch of
the Commercial Press. From the early 1960's, this
slrelch of \Vanchai / Causeway Bay had gradually
but magically become one of the most popular and
thriving dining, shopping and enlerlainmenl hubs
