Up until the mid 1930's, the tram operalion
belween King's Road and Shau Kei \Van was a
Lwo-way monorail, double or Lwin line laybys

same line.
In Lhc early prc-dcvclopmcnl days, Lhc
slrelch or land exlending from Healthy Village lo
Lhe Quarry Bay area consisled of many rice fields
and farming villages. The coaslline was home lo
Lhe previously menlioned swimming pavilions and
beaches. The mosl famous enlerlainmenl complex
was Lhe Ritz, which comprised a large indoor
swimming pool, outdoor swimming f'acililics, a mini
golf course, a skaling rink and a fabulous nighlclub
where quite a few sessions of the annual "~liss
Hong Kong Pageant" were held therein. On the hill
opposite Lhc aforementioned facilities sLood the
Yee Pak Kung Temple where many ladies of the
night paid their respects and sought solutions to
Lheir earthly problems.
Next, one can take a journey into the past
and visualise the business sites run by the Swire
Group, i.e. sugar refineries, painl works, docl<yard
facilities and the provision of staff quarters. All
Lhese places have now been replaced by the
Taikoo Place, 'Taikoo Shing, Kornhill and Lhe
Kornhill Plaza which are for residenlial cum
commercial purposes. Parl of the staff quarters
have now been morphed inlo Lhe Harbour View

Flowing eastwards towards Sai \Van Ho, one
may lry lo locale the former sites of long gone
Lhealres such as Cheung Lok (1924-1969), Golden
Slar and \\Ting \Vah 'Theatre. Visitors can then
enler Lhe Shau Kei \Van / Aldrich Bay area which
in very early limes was known as "Ngor Yan \Van"
(Bay of slarving men). Legend has il the name
came aboul, after a group of British merchants
were marooned in the area following a typhoon
in the 18th century, only to find that there was
no food Lo buy in the area. Times have changed
and there are ealeries galore in the whole area.
At Nam On Street and Hing 1Ian Street one can

Lhe old days Lhe many f'aclories Lhal were sel up
here, e.g. Fung Keung Shoe Faclory. Laslly, seek
divine blessing by visiling Lhe nearby Tam Kung
'remple and Tin Hau Temple. Al lhe end of Lhe lour
parlicipanls can palronise Lhe various ealcrics
especially along Shau Kei \Vai ~Jain Slreel Easl.
The choice of cuisine and menu is endless bul
many may opl for such lradilional favouriles like
fishballs wilh noodles or wide flal rice noodles,
cooked pork chop rice or slirred fried garoupa

銅鑼灣天后廟，約

此座於

1年開埠前落成的古廟，早期已有紅色及銅製的香爐，因此當時的銅鑼灣亦有「紅香爐」
或「銅香爐」的別名。其東逆的地段亦因此廟而定名為天后區。
1920年代初，有一民新製片公司在「天
后廟側」攝製電影，故這處有一條銀幕街。片場旁有一個山崗，頂端有一座岳王廟。

他遷，山崗被夷平以開闢英皇道。

成五洲大廈。左方的石山亦同時轉變為南方大廈及南天大廈。

在戰後填海地段上開闢之春秧街，
1981年。
50年代初，街道左邊與及背接英皇道的地段上，共建有
40幢樓宇，因此這一帶常被稱為「四十
間」。街道兩旁麋集肉類蔬果店舖和攤檔，直到現時仍為－個「人車爭路」的繁囂市集。（圖片由何其
