何東爵士。字曉生。系藉嶺南。生長香江。嚴父早背。遺雛七人。家 境寒微。僅學私塾。母氏殊賢。督課不懈。及習英文。勤敏異常。師愛其 才。概免學費。數載于茲。業乃大進。繼升皇仁。六年卒業。博覽羣籍。 學飽中西。爲謀水之歡。留校充助校。越年考垣海關。勳理稅務。治 事精勤。深爲上峯器重。服務兩年。告辭返港任英商怡和洋行華副經理職 。越二年。香港火險。廣東水險兩公司組設華人辦事新行。并以經理要席 聘請兼領。復辦理航業。糖業。身膺數職。策劃過詳。興利弊。憶則屢 中。業務邃蒸蒸日上。未幾怡和洋行推之爲華總經理。益展鴻才。建樹獨 多。直至一九〇〇年,始以積勞告退。該行勉其所辭。然銘鐘紀緒。贈書
敍功。于一九三八年將爵士玉照。懸賞該行總經理室。用表敬慕。其盛德 感人。勞苦功高。有如此者。爵士曾担保其哲嗣世榮任匯豐銀行華總經理 。蠲免華人職員巨金保証條例。使寒門長才。得有服務機會。人皆感戴大 德。嗣後爵士自營商業。季然奇計。范蠡宏謀。一帆風順。勝算必操。三 十歲時。已成香港百萬富戶。三十八歲後。蔚爲港中企業領袖。營業範圍 。且遠至華北及南洋羣島各地。而港中最大商行。推之任董事及主席者。 不知凡幾。對于教育事業。尤爲關心。培植人材。扶掖後進。引爲己任。 皇仁書院。曾捐巨量之獎學金。香港大學創辦時。更大解義囊。竭力匡助 。一九四〇年慨捐十五萬元建立香港大學堂貧民贈醫所及衛生院各一所。 總計前後捐欸達四十一萬元之巨。其他稍具成績之學校。多蒙其資助學額 獎品基金等。爵士更念學校雖多。而貧民無與。邃斥資遍設義學夜校。以

謀教育之普及。復在九龍創設歐學校。以利該處外藉子弟求學。其不分軫域。嘉 惠仕林。誠足稱頌。對於社會慈善事業。不吝資助。一九三一年。爵士舉行金婚典 禮。乃捐資二十萬元。以半數建築新界兒童幸福會一所。以半數撥充本港貧女敎育 費。一九三四年。又捐十萬元。在香港仔建設兒童工藝學院。復捐贈本港禁止虐待 畜生會。建築畜生收養所一座。德及禽獸。古道可風。儒士于一八九九年就東華醫 院首席總理任内。以地方狹小。病者日增。幾無地收容。乃四方奔走。籌建東華東 院。添置醫藥器材。卒賴宏謀。蔚成大觀。全港居民。咸受其賜。十餘年前。本港 米荒嚴重。乃首倡救濟。慨捐萬元。運米施粥。以拯飢黎。義風所播。薄海同欽。 及東江大水。華北旱災。哀鴻遍野。均以義粟仁槳。撥助救濟。存活至衆。第一次 歐戰爆發。爵士義形於色。捐助飛機二架。及救護車數輛。同時港府因籌募軍需。 合住戶繳納凡百抽七租值。以充差餉。爵士爲本港最大業主。本其好義之心。將名 困及批出房屋加抽之款。概歸其繳納。港人稱頌弗置。一九二二年香港海員。 因加薪問題。發生工潮。爵士本息事寧人之義。親任調解。允給工人罷工期內半 事始寢息。不偏不倚,勞資共戴。斯次爲玉成義舉。所捐亦不貲也。十年來爵士 。禮賢下士。人望益隆。譽滿寰宇。中英政府畀倚尤殷。爵士爲香港大學名譽法律 博士最先之一人,亦為本港太平紳士之先進。除在本港歷任華商總會董事。華商會 所首屆會長。保良局紳及永遠顧問、東華三院首總理及永遠顧問。皋署高等陪審員 。經濟調查局分任委員會會長等職外。一九一五年。得英國爵士榮銜。我國亦于 戰時。派充赴美調查商務委員。後又委爲太平洋會議代表團顧問。一九二二年。得 我國政府一等大綬嘉禾章。前總統徐世昌。黎元洪亦曾設宴于總統府。各部長列席 陪座。一九二四至一九二五年。任英國全國博覽會香港區名譽副監督。一九二五年 。得英京聖約翰救傷隊爵位獎章。另葡萄牙爵士勛章。當我國內戰甚烈時。爵士蒿 日時危。奔走南北。呼籲和平。發起和平統一會議。其憂國傷時。悲天憫人之情。 至足欽佩。一九三〇年再得葡萄牙晉陞高等爵士勛章。一九三二年。得法國大勳章 及德國一等全國紅十字大勳章。一九三三年。得意大利及比利士爵位勳章。遊歐時 。曾蒙德總統。瑞士總統。法總理。意教皇及慕沙理尼首相等均親自接見。一九三 六年。得安南皇爵士勳章。本港各界購機慶祝蔣公壽辰。助資十萬。慨捐一機。以 充實國防。其對祖國之熱誠。尤足於式。現仍任國民政府高等顧問職。爵士曾遍遊 世界各地。及我國各省。所到之處。當地官紳。莫不優禮款待。
統觀士生平。身擁巨資。富甲一方。財可謂廣矣。扶搖直上。榮膺爵士。祿 可謂厚矣。松柏節操。陽當八秩。可謂高矣。世人之功名利達。富貴壽考。爵士 兼而有之。其對社會人類之貢獻。豐功盛德。光被四表。萬流景仰。誠足以銘 鼎 。而被絃謌者。而爵士晏如也。名滿天下而不居。信孚中外而不悖。清風亮節。退 隱林下。優遊自得。天年頤養。世人之頌揚爵士者,乃道德之國字。本文之作。亦 非尋常諛頌之詞也。爵士於一八八〇年受室。夫人殊賢德。樂善好施。曾獲英京聖 約翰救傷隊榮耀獎章。

過去百年歷史當中,在社會有地位的人和工商業有成就的人是很多,其間使人景和失人敬愛使人 模範的史實,足以表揚我華人對商業的奮鬥,對社會的貢獻, 對祖國的協助的; 同時在此百
雷 中,更不少捐輸努力愛國熱心的人士,而我們未能一一採集,一方面作忠實之報導,獻導讀者,一方
面盡書懿德,同垂久遠,這是深引為憾的!

在傳記史實的篇幅,我們首先感謝每一位工商業領袖,社會聞人,慈善熱心者,望于我
幫助及獻給一切史料,同人未能寫成讚頌詞的一類章句,或用高深的文筆描摹,而我們只採示的 真實性,以為介紹的紀念耳。
百年商業籌備了九個多月的時間,原本一件複雜麻煩的事,用幾個月的光陰並不是消費,為館 一位傳記,都經過很長的時間完成的,從採訪,發函,訪問,草稿,正,請譯,製版,編排,對, 印刷,釘裝才至完成。單談印刷的部分,此書耗了六個月的時光,如果稍為明白出版事業的人,一定 可以原諒我們出版工作的艱辛。
關于全書編輯,初期計劃中英文對照的,後來因為印刷上稍感困難,和編輯的關係,是以不三不 取銷英文,祇在聞人史實中撮意譒譯;而一部份來稿稍遲未能譒譯者,並希見諒。
至於編排次序,因印刷上的關係,以來稿先後為標準,並不是因地位關係或編者的成、次表
我幼年讀及世界名人成功史册,每為之神往,其成功並非偶然的,更不是僥倖的;經透過 慧,聰明,社會環境,及一生艱苦奮鬥之精神,其人格道德均足使人一一敬仰,現輯香港聞人守質的 的篇幅,在此百餘位先生之事蹟中,每位都有他的歷史地位,及其奮鬥的價值,其間接接到于香港 社會的貢獻,商業的繁榮,每個人事業一步步踏上成功的途徑,均足使人景仰與模範的
對于已故聞人,均同樣將其生平事蹟寫出。但不稱先生而稱公,以作為...
寡,更不是稍存輕此重彼的觀念,而是我們的事實佈告。
成功的寶座,是經過一條很長的階梯,這階梯是用很長的時間踏上,成功的金字塔,是發去不少 的血汗,纔建成這不朽的功勳,給予社會人羣以幸福。這是值得我們的歌頌吧.

Sir Robert H. Kotewall, Kt., C. M. G., LL. D., J. P.
Sir Robert H. Kotewall, Kt., C. M. G., LL.D., J. P., Member of the Executive Council, has had one of the most meteotic carers in the history of Hong Kong.
Born in 1881, Sir Robert Kotewall received his education at the Queen's College and the Diocesan Boys School. He commenced his business career as a junior clerk in the Police Department, after a competitive examination in which he obtained the first place, and even as a young clerk showed unusual qualities. He was later appointed to positions that had never before, nor have since been held by a Chinese such as First Clerk of the Colonial Secretary's Office; First Clerk of the Magistracy; Acting Chief Clerk of the Hong Kong Government Service., and Official Justice of the Peace. While in the Government Senice, he received a large number of commendations from successive Governors and Secretaries of State for the Colonies, particularly in connection with the preparation of the Annual Estimates.
On leaving the Government to take up the managership of a commercial firm in 1916, he received thanks of the Hong Kong Government and the whole Community.
He was appointed acting Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council in March, 1923, being given the substantive ap- pointment in October of the same year. On many occasions, Sir RoberKt otewall has come to the help of the Colony, his most outstanding moment in the history of Hong Kong being his invaluable aid in 1925 during the strike and boycott. His plans and schemes for raising the $30,000,000 loan, which saved the Colony from the economical depression more than ten yeary ago, had been praised by the Sunday Herald as the " $ 30.000,000 Speech." For his great service he was awarded the C.M.G. by His Majesty the King in 1927. He was also honoured by the University of Hong Kong with the LL. D. In 1938, he was kinghted by His Majesty the King on the occosion of His Birthday.
Besides having served as Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council for three terms, and Member of the Egcec- utiwe Council for more than seven terms, the number of public organisations, committees and commissions which Sir Robert Kotewall has served is very large. Among them may be mentioned the Member of the District Watchmen's Committee; Member of the Housing Commission; the Medical and Sanitary Service Keorganisation Committee; Vice- Chairman, Chinese Public Dispensarics Committee; President, League of Nations Society, Hong Kong Branch; Vice-Pres- ident, and Chairman, Society for the Protection of Children; Patron, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals; Patron, St. John's Ambulance Brigade; Vice-President, English Association Hong Kong, Branch; Councilor, Tung Wah Hospital; Counoilor, Po Lung Kuk; Hon President, Chung Sing Benevolent Society; Member, Council and Court of the Hong Kong University; Chairmen, Board of Control Morrison Hall; Hon. Permanent Examiner to Chinese Langnage School of the General Chamber of Commerce; Member of the Board of Directors of the Diocesan Boys' School and the St. Paul's Girls' School; Hon. President of the South China Athletic Association and Chinese Recreation club; Councilor of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce; Hon. President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Union; Vice.President of the Chinese Merchants' Club ane many others.
In Commercial circle he is founder and Directoa of Messrs. Kotewall & Co., Director, Chinese Eetates, Ltd.; Director, Shui On Wing & Co., Ltd.; Director, Hong Kong Telephone Co., Ltd.; Adviser to Nan Yang Bros. Tobacco Co., Ltd.; China Bus Co., Ltd.; and Kowloon Motor Bus Co., Ltd.
In recent years Sir Robert Kotewall are often invited by various War Relie Association and Charitable Societies to broadcast and call for support to their Campaigns.
Sir Robert Kotewall is deeply interested in literature, both Chinese and English. He has a wide knowledge of both languages, and some of his translations have been described as master pieces of English. His library is recognised by many as the best in the Colany.

Hon. Mr. M. K. Lo, C. B. E., J. P. Hon. Mr. M. K. Lo, C. B. E., J. P., was born in Hong Kong, 1893. He is the elder son of the late Mr. Lo Cheong Sheu, a prominent merchant and leading social figure of his time. Being bestowed with such talents, Mr. Lo was highly come mended even when he was a lad. After finishing his primary education in Hong Kong, he went to England for advanced study. He passed the Solicitors' Final and Solicitors' Honours Examinations in 1915, and came first in the First Class in

He returned to the Colony in the some year and since then he practises his profession gaining much recommendation Mr. Lo is an infuential factor and zealous worker in social affairs. He was appointed a Justice of the Pence, 1921: Member of the Sanitary Board and afterwards Urban Council, 1932-1936; Member of the District Watch Committen since 1932; and Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council since 1935. He is Ex-officio Member of the Council and court of the University of Hong Kong, Member of the Advisory Board of the Tung Wali Hospital, Permanent Member of the Come tittee of the Po Leung Kuk, Hon. Legal Adviser of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and other institutions. He had served also on numerous Committees appointed by the Government. In recognition of his services, he was bestowed with the Order of C. B. E. by His Majesty on His Birthday in 1941.
At various times he held the positions of Chairman of the Chinese Club, Sports Club, Chinese Amateur Athletic Feder- ation, Society for the Protection of Children and Children's Playgrounds Association; President, Hong Kong Rotary Club and Euro-American Retnrned Students' Union, and Hon. President and Vice-President and Member of numerous other public
bodies, associations and Clubs.

Sir Shou-son Chow, (周壽臣)Kt., C.M.G., J.P., Grand Old Man of Hong Kong, belongs to the Po On District, Kwangtung Province, and was born in the Colony eighty years ago. He was selected by the Chinese Government to study in the Columbia University, N.Y., in 1874. On return to China in 1881, he held an im- portant post in the Chinese Customs in Korea. Three years later, he was appointed Consul-General in Jinsen, Korea. He was appointed President of the Chinese Merchants Steamship Navigation Co., Tientsin, in 1903, and transferred to President of the Peking-Mukden Railway, in 1907. Since then, he was in the position of various Mandarins in Northern China and his excellent reputation was spread far and abroad.
After the formation of the Republic of China, he was honoured by the late President Yuan Shih-kai with conferring of the Order of the Excellent Crop (3rd Grade) in 1912. In 1918 he was given the Second Grade of the same Order, and one year later, the former President Hsu Shih-chang bestowed on him the Medal of Brilliancy (2nd Grade).
He was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Hong Kong Government in 1917, Member of the Sanitary Board and Member of the Legislative Council in 1922. He was knighted by His Majesty the late King George V in 1926. In the following year, he was appointed Member of the Executive Council. In 1933, he was con- ferred by the University of Hong Kong with an Honorary Degree of LL.D. During the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty the late King George V, in 1935, he was again decorated by the late King.
In recognition of his works in promoting sales of the Chinese National Salvation Bonds, for which he is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Sub-Committee, he was bestowed by the National Government of China with the Order of Precious Jade (3rd Grade).
Sir Shou-son is very prominent in commercial cicle, having the chair in the Directorate of many impor- tant firms and public utility concerns such as the Bank of East Asia; the China Entertainment and Land Investment Co.; the China Emporium; the Hongkong Telephone Co.; the Hongkong Electric Co.; the Hong Kong Tramway; the International Assurance; Messrs. A. S. Watson; the Hongkong China Realty and Trust Co.; the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Co., Ltd., and many others.
Sir Shou-son is a willing supporter to various philantrophic activities being Permanent Adviser of the Tung Wah Hospital, Public Dispensaries and the Po Leung Kuk. He is also the President of the Hongkong Society for the Protection of Children, Patron of the Chinese Mission to Lepers, Member of the Committee of District Watchmen, Adviser to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Hon. President of the South China Athletic Association and the Chinese Recreation Club, and official of various associations.
Sir Shou-son has a happy family with many children and plenty grand and great-grand children.

The Honourable Mr. Li Tse Fong is a native of the Hokshan district in the Province of Kwongtung. He was born in Hong Kong in 1891 and is a son of the late Mr. Li Shek Pang, founder of the well known shipping firm Wo Fat Sing. In his youth Mr. Li was sent to Canton, the capital of Kwongtung Province, where he received his early education in Chinese literature and prepared himself to sit for the Imperial Examination with a view to enter the Chinese Civil Service. When this system of examination was abolished Mr. Li returned to the Colony and took up the study of English language under private tutors. A few years later he entered Queen's College where he obtained many distinctions and won several Scho- larships including the Senior Bililios and Senior Morrison Scholarship.
In 1911, when the University of Hong Kong opened its doors Mr. Li was among the first students of the Faculty of Arts where he graduated and received the degree of B. A. in 1916. Almost immediately after his graduation Mr. Li found himself in a position of great responsibility. His father died in the Summer of 1916 and as a consequence his elder brother Mr. Li Koon Chun. the head of the family, had to go to French Indo-China to look after the large business interest there. Mr. Li was in full charge of his late father's firm Wo Fat Sing which was operating a fleet of five steamers. The last Great World War was still in progress and problems, connected with shipping in that particular period, were not easy matters. When in late 1917 the local Government decided to requisition all shipping Mr. Li was in no small measure res ponsible for the formation of the Hongkong Shipowners Protection Association which was able to secure special treatment and concession for local shipping companies from the Government.
In 1918, with a number of close friends includind the Hon. Sir Shouson Chow, and Mr. Kan Tong Po, Mr. Li was planning the establishment of a Chinese banking concern on modern and up-to-date lines. Through his untiring efforts, the Bank of Cast Asia, Ltd. was formed in November 1918 and opened its doors for the transaction of business early in 1919. Since then he has been in close connection with the development of the bank and is now Manager and Director.
In addition to his interest in the Bank of East Asia, Ltd. the Hon. Mr. Li is also Director of the following companies:-

Mr. Li was appointed by Government to be a Chinese member of the Legislative Council on 17th January 1941. He had however served as an acting member for several months in 1939. He is also an unofficial justice of the peace as well as member of the following public bodies:

The Hon. Mr. Li has rendered many public services and served on several committees appointed by Government to consider various important local questions. He was member of the Stamp Duties Committee in 1929, the Currency Com- mission in 1930, The Tung Wah Hospitals Finance Committee in 1937, the Teachers Training Committee in 1938 and the War Taxation Committee in 1939. He was an acting member of the Urban Council in 1939 and a nominated member in 1940 but resigned from that post upon his appointment to the Legislative Council this year. He is a member of the Auditors Advisory Committee and the Board of Review in the War Taxation Department.
The Hon. Mr. Li was married to a daughter of the late Mr. Tang Wing Shing compradore of the Merchantile Band of India (Hong Kong Branch). They have nine children (3 daughters and 6 sons). They are:-

Wong Tape,
one of the most prominent merchants in Hong Kong, is a native of Toishan District, Kwangtung
Province, andwas born in 1875 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.
He came to Hongkong with his parents in 1886 and entered Queen's College, where he passed out Class I in 1892. As there was no University in Hongkong at that time, he proceeded to Dunedin, New Zealand, and completed his education at the Otago Boys High School.
In 1906, he returned once more to the Colony and joined the China Mutual Life Insurance Co., Ltd., where lie rose the position of Secretary in 1909 and became manager of the Hongkong branch in 1919.
Later, the firm was taken over by the Sun Life Assurance Co., of Canada and in turn he became Resident Secretary of the local branch of that company. He became official-in-charge of that firm in 1927 and retired from this executive position in 1934, but retaining his connection with the company as local adviser for South China.
Mr. B. Wong Tape has been a non-official Justice of the Peace since 1924. He has also been a member of the Po Leung Kuk; Chairman of the Chinese Y.M.C.A; President of the Chinese Club, the Chinese Recreation Club and the Queen's College Old Boys' Association and Vice-president of the Kowloon Residents' Association. He is at president member of the Urban Counciland a member of the Court of the University of Hongkong.
Married to Ng Kwai Chuen, Mr. Wong Tape has two sons. Mr. Eric Wong Tape, his elder son, obtained his B.Sc. degree from the Hongkong University in 1930. Then he became a staff in the Public Works Department and two years later became assistant engineer in the construction of the Shing Mun Dam and Resevoir. He proceeded to England in 1933 and completed his practical training as engineer with Messrs. Dorman, Long & Co., where he obtained the degrees
of A.M. I. C. E. and A. M. I. Struct. E.

Mr. Ip Lan Chuen, J. P., Managing Director of the famous firecrackers manufactory, Messrs. Kwong Man Lung Fire-
cracker Co., Ltd., belongs to the Hok-shan District, Kwangtung Province. At the age of seventy-six, he is today one of the
grand-old-men in Hong Kong. Besides his great success in business, with a name well-known in the commercial circle for
nearly sixty years, he has rendered memorable works to the welfare of the public. He is one of the founders of the Chinese
Chamber of Commerce, and had served as Manager of the Chamber of over eighteen years. He is also the founder of the Fok Shan Traders Association and the Chinese Manufacturers Union. He had served also as Member of the Board of Directors of
the Tung Wah Hospital and the Po Leung Kuk and other institutions.
In 1937 he promoted a sale of more than two hundred thousand dollars National Bonds for the Chinese National Govern- ment; he rendered also great help to the flood relief in northern Provinces in China years ago, and the present War Relief Works. During the "Strike Period" in Hong Kong he helped extensively bringing reconciliation between the Govenment and the Stri-kers. He was decorated by the Chinese National Government with the Order of the Excellent Crop, and also by the
King of Britain in 1938.
Presently he is the Director of Messrs. Cheong Woo Chen, the China Products Co. (H. K.) Ltd., the Chinese Permanent Cemetery and the Chinese National Salvation Bonds Sub-Committee; Hon. Secretary of the Confucius Hall; Member of the Committees of the Society for the Protection of Children, St. Jolin Ambulance Association and Brigade, the British War Time Relief Association, and other Charitable and Relief organizations; and Director of the Kwangtung Provincial Relief Associa- tion, Hong Kong Branch.

Mr. Chan Yuk Chuen was Colony at 21 to assist his father. the late Mr. Chan Yin Tong, in the imports and exports business. Two years later he sailed for America and return after six years' staying. He founded the Wah Sun Piece Goods Importers Co., in 1911 and the Hong Lee Imports & Exports Co., in the recent year; the later is under the management of his son, Mr. Chan Kế

He had rendered a great help to the Revolution and forming of the Republic of China by promoting funds to aid the late Dr. Sun Yat-san, Father of the Republic of China and the former Governor of Kwangtung, late Mr. Wu Hang- min. He had donated also large sum of money for the construction of his native land, the Tin Woo Village, setting up free school, public library, free medical centre, and opening high ways.

of Justice of the Peace and of District Watchmen Committee. When in his teens, he began his long success- laden career in this Colony, taking a minor position in the American Tobacco Company. He was soon promoted compradore before he was 30. Although he was the youngest of all the Chinese compradores in Hong Kong at that time, he was advanced in his ability and he was successively invited to enter into partnership with many leading firms, among which were Eastern Ice Factory, Oriental Hair Co. and A. B. Moulder & Co. He devoted all his energy day and night with undaunted willingness, and all the enterprises he took up became increas- ingly prosperous with his careful and accurate foresight.
At the age of about 50, he retired from business. But experience had won him the esteem of his friends, who requested him to take up business again. Refusals proving vain, he became the Director and Treasurer of China Entertainment & Land Investment Co., Ltd.. Managing Director of Luen On Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Ltd., Chairman of Universal Type Founders, Ltd. Director of China Dispensary (Y. C. Wong & Co.), Ltd., Proprietor of Wing Nam Watches and Jewelry Firm and Managing Director of Jowson Co., Ltd. He has been holding different important posts He was the Advisor of the Kwangtung Provincial Government, Director of the Tung Wah Hospital and Po Leung Kuk, Chairman of Sun-wui Commercial Cham- ber and Chairman of National Commercial & Savings Bank, Ltd.; he is now still serving as Council Member of the University of Hong Kong, Chairman of Chinese Public Dispensary, Eastern District, Member of Execu- tive Committee of Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Director of Sze Yap Commercial and Industrial Association Director of Sun-wui Commercial Chamber, Vice-patron of St. John Ambulance Brigade, Member of Executive Committee of Hong Kong Property Owners Association and Member of Committee of Chinese Permanent Cemetry.
Since the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese hostilities, he was appointed by the Central Government Member of the Chinese National Salvation Bonds Committee (Hong Kong Branch).

Mr. Chan Lan-Fong, (陳蘭芳) aged 57, is a native of Tung-kuon. He began manufac- turing fire crackers in Tung-Kuon city, where he established the Chan Tai Kee Fire Cracker
Company.
In 1916 Mr. Chan established Kwong Man Lung, Fire Cracker Works at Mongkok; and later removed to Kowloon, in 1925, where a larger factory was erected to accommondate about one thousand workers. In the same year he established four fire cracker companies, the Kwong Hing Lung, Kwong Hing Tai, Nan Yang and Lung Tai Kee at Macau, and another, the Ham Lung Fire Cracker Works at Fat-san. This chain of fire cracker factories employed more than four thousand workers. Their products have been exported to America, Australia, Africa
and Strait Settlements.

Lambert Gockchin, (郭琳弼) aged 33, was born in Chung-shan District, Kwangtung Province. In 1931 he graduated from the Lingnan University, Canton, as a Bachelor of Busi- ness Administration and subsequently travelled to the United States of America and Europe on a business investigation mission. On his return he joined the executive staff of The Wing On Company, Ltd., Hong Kong, to which his association had resultingly imparted many bene- fits. In 1934, he joined The Wing On Bank Ltd., as its Assistant Manager, a position he holds up to today. He is the Founder and Chief Manager of The World Pencil Co., Ltd., Hong Kong, and has also an active interest in many industrial and commercial enterprises in China and Hong Kong, among which are The Wing On Co., Ltd., Hong Kong, The Wing On Fire & Marine Insurance Co., Ltd., Hong Kong, The Wing On Co., Fed. Inc.,U.S.A., Shanghai, The Hotel Enterprise, Ltd., Hong Kong, and The St. Francis Hotel, Ltd., Hong Kong, in which concerns he holds a directorship.
Mr. Gockchin is a devout Christian, taking part in many social and philanthropic acti- vities. He is a member of the Rotary Club, Hong Kong, and is also a former director of the Chinese Y.M.C.A., South China Athletic Association, Tung Wah Hospitals, Po Leung Kuk, and a member of the Committees of the Chinese Youth's Medical Relief Association, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and the Chung-shan Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Gockchin's wife, formerly Miss Li Foo Yung, is the daughter of Dr. Li Shu Fan. She was educated at the Lingnan University, Canton. She is a Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Wo- men's Club, Chairman of the South China Industrial Works for Refugees, Dean of the Ladies Division of the South China Athletic Association, and a former Director of the Po Leung Kuk and the Chinese Women's Christian Association.

Mr. Tung Chung Wai,(董仲偉) Treasurer of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, and
Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Gold & Silver Exchange, was born in the Chung- shan District, Kwangtung Province fifty years ago. He establish the Choy Kee Bunk in 1908, and in 1922 he established another bank named To Hang. Both well-known banks turn out to be
leading local banks, and Mr. Tung, a prominent banker in the Colony.
A busy business man he is, but he still find time for all kinds of charitable and patriotic works. Under his Chairmanship, the Gold & Silver Exchange donated in aeroplane to the Central Government on the birthday of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. He is a member of the Chinese National Salvation Bonds, Hong Kong Sub-Committee, and has promoted large
sales since the out-break of the Sino-Japanese War.
He has a virtious wife and seven sons all of whom are well-educated.

Mr. Lam Pui Sang, born in Hoksan, Kwangtung, is now of 59 years of age. He is owner of several Boarding houses in Hongkong, namely, Cheong Fat Boarding House, Chung Kwok Boarding House, and Chung Yuen Boarding House. He is also owner of Chung Yuen Hotel in Canton. Being of a very patriotic nature he has never returned to Canton since the loss of that city, to the invaders. He also established On Kltic Loan and Morgage Co., Ltd., and Wing wali Jewellery shop., Interna- tional Motor Garage. During the present war, conditions are not what they should be, and businese has been dull. During the present war, he has not lacked in giving his share towards relief work, and he has represented several charitable and re- lief institutions. He is well known in Hongkong, and is a member of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. He is the head of the Lam clan Committee. He is a member of the Kwangtung Relief Work Committee, also he is member of the Kwangtung Refugee Centre. Also he is member of the Hongkong Refugee Relief Committee. Concise Notes On Mr. Chan Kam Po's Social Activities, Etc. Mr. Chan Kam Po(陳鑑坡), born in Hong Kong in 1881, always attaches himself dearly to his ancestral home in the Po On District, Kwangtung Province, He obtained the B. AGR. degree from the University of Californin in 1907 and ree turned to China. He had since held important positions under the Chinese Government, incuding those of Port Master of Chin Hsien, Superintendent of the Telegraphic Administration of An Tung, Harbour Master of Changchun, Adviser to the Kwangtung Governer, Vice Major-general of the War Office, Land Officer of Po On District, Member of various Councils
including that of Po On District.
Commercially, Mr. Chan is well known and is now Managing Director of C. Ah Ying & Co., 1.td., Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Po On Ngam-How Motor Road Co., Ltd., Managing Director of the Kong On Steam Ship Com Ltd., Chairman of the Committee of Inspection of the Bank of Canton, Ltd., Managing Director of Wing Fit & Co., Ltd., Chief Manager of Choy Cheong & Co. and Director of the Bank of Canton, Ltd., and of other commercial concerns. Apart from his many duties, Mr. Chan devotes considerable time for the advancement of Chinese education. has been Chairman of The Nam Shan School, Vice Chairman of The Man Fun College, Principal of the 19 schools man- fucian College, Sai Nam College, Sheung Fu College, Hong Kong College, Ching Wah College, and Nanyang Commercial aged by The Hong Kong Confucian Society. He is at present member of the Committees of the Tung Chi Collește, Con- In 1904, Mr. Chan subscribed a substantial sun ($20,000.00) to the Man Yuk Educational Society towards an endowment fund for the advancement of the objects of that society.

Mr. Chan is highly respected in social circles. Lam Shiu Fan is a native of Kit Yeung District, Kwangtung Province. Born in a Christians family he is a member of Baptist Church, and the China Christian Club.
Mr. Lam was well-educated in his youth. He graduated from Tung Man College, Amoy, in 1914, and joined the Hip Woo University, Peiping for advanced study. He is very amiable and zealous in charitable work, being regarded as a model of the young Christians. As he stepped into business circles he is faithful to all who dealt business with him. This enable him to bring his shipping company, coal company, bank and cotton yarn company etc. to a "Do not want others to prosperous state. He acts according to the proverb which says:
serve you, but to be served by others." When he was in Indo-China, he handled foreign affairs for the Chinese National Government to accomplish the Sino-French Treaty. He was given the Order of the Dragon by the King of Indo-China. He was President of the Eight Districts Chamber of Commerce of Chiuchow of Hong Kong. At present he is the chairman of the South China War Relief Association; President of Y.M.C.A.; Director of True Reason Hospital; Ling Nam University; Pui Ching Middle School; and Munsang College etc.
Mrs. Lam (Chan Jick Ting) is a wise and virtuous lady as well as a good housekeeper. They have seven sons and two daughters.
