More than 670 000 people visited the museum's exhibitions and 320 000 people attended the educational and extension programmes in 2008.

Hong Kong Film Archive

The Hong Kong Film Archive's major functions are to acquire, preserve, catalogue and document Hong Kong films and related materials. The building houses a cinema, an exhibition hall, a resource centre and four temperature- controlled storerooms for the collection. It has already acquired more than 8 000 films and 897 000 related materials, mainly through donations and deposits. Major acquisitions in 2008 included award trophies from Mr Johnnie To and memorabilia of actress Lin Dai. More than 236 000 people visited the archive in 2008.

Art Promotion Office

The Art Promotion Office organised numerous activities and projects on public and community art in collaboration with various partners for the promotion of art appreciation and public participation.

In response to a call from the Commission of Culture and Olympic Education of the International Olympic Committee for a linking of the worlds of art and sport, an 'Olympic Sport and Art Contest 2008′ was organised for submission of sculptural and graphical works. Two selected entries were delivered to Switzerland to participate in the international contest in April 2008. The 'Artist in the Neighborhood Scheme' entered its fourth round and a series of travelling exhibitions was planned for presentation in 2008-2010. The opening exhibition of the scheme and three solo exhibitions of selected works took place and in addition, the 'Mobile Art Gallery 2008', a partnership project with the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and two outside organisations, was mounted during the summer. Graphic artwork reproductions of 21 entries by local artists selected by competition were displayed on public buses and bus shelters from June to December 2008.

Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre

The Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre which is equipped with nine art studios, a lecture theatre, an exhibition hall and a multi-purpose room, focuses on training in the visual arts, promotion and provision of facilities for professionals to hire. An 'Art Specialist Course 2008-09' was run with a graduation exhibition scheduled for January 2009. To support and promote the development of Hong Kong art, the centre also organised a series of New Media Art workshops and video screenings of works by contemporary artists.

Central Conservation Section

The Central Conservation Section's role is to look after and preserve the public museum collections for present and future generations to view and appreciate. It has facilities for maintaining and treating more than 610 cultural objects, including paintings, documents, prints, textiles, metals, ceramics, organic materials and archaeological finds.
