demonstrated the nature, skills and scientific principles behind a number of Olympic events, plus specially made exhibits paying tribute to contributions by local institutes and organisations.
Other major special exhibitions during the year included 'Wildlife Photographers of the Year', comprising over 200 winning photographs that combined artistic perspective, technical expertise and the natural beauty of animals in the wild, and 'The Deep' which featured videos, photographs and specimens of unusual animals of the deep sea.
The Government of Yunnan Province generously donated the fossilised skeleton of a Lufengosaur to the museum. This very first dinosaur species to be studied in China was also the first complete dinosaur skeleton excavated, conserved, mounted and named. Measuring 3.8 metres long and 2.2 metres tall, the skeleton is preserved in excellent condition and mounted in a natural posture.
The museum also staged a special exhibition on China's First Spacewalk Mission featuring China's manned space programme and spacewalk mission by Shenzhou-7 astronauts. Exhibits included the re-entry capsule of the Shenzhou-7 spacecraft, spacesuits and the national flag displayed during the spacewalk.
The Museum's Science News Corner staged three thematic exhibitions: 'Artificial Intelligence and Railway Engineering Works Scheduling', 'Palmprint Identification System' and 'Brain Development and Disease'. These were organised jointly with the City University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to introduce their latest scientific projects. These exhibitions together with the permanent ones attracted more than 1 077 000 visitors.
Five renowned scholars from the Mainland and Hong Kong delivered lectures at the 'Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series 2008', organised jointly by the China Association for Science and Technology, Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, the China Association (Hong Kong) for Science and Society and the museum. The topics covered astrophysics, polar science, earthquakes, energy resources and neuroscience.
During the year, the museum worked with academic institutions, professional bodies and government departments on a number of
a number of special programmes and projects under such titles as 'Science Alive', 'Fun Science Competition', 'Primary Science Project Exhibition', 'Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition', 'Robotic Festival', and 'Science in the Public Service' Campaign'.
Hong Kong Space Museum
The year saw the completion of the 'Hong Kong Space Museum Sai Kung ¡Observatory', which is located in the Lady MacLehose Holiday Village. The Stanley Ho Space Theatre was closed from November 17, 2008 for a major refurbishment, the first since its opening in 1980. The project included the installation of a new digital planetarium system and the replacement of seats with the Multi-Language and Interactive System.
