A total of 46 persons, including 23 staff members of the Immigration Department, are injured in a fire at the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai. A senior immigration officer and a right of abode claimant die nine days later. Police classify the case as homicide and arson, and subsequently lay charges against 22 persons.
The Government reaches agreement with Cyber-Port Limited, a special purpose vehicle set up under Pacific Century CyberWorks to perform the role of Cyberport developer, on the Residential Portion Land Value for the Cyberport project. The agreed figure is $7.80098 billion.
The Hong Kong Police Force and the Guangdong Border Defence Bureau hold a meeting to discuss the works of the two forces in maintaining law and order at both sides of the boundary and to review the results of a joint exercise conducted in April, The North Block and West Block of St Joseph's College at 7 Kennedy Road, Hong Kong are gazetted as historical buildings under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance. On December 29, Waglan Island Lighthouse and Tang Lung Chau Lighthouse are also gazetted as historical buildings.
The Secretary for Works, Mr Lee Shing-see, leads a 45-member delegation to Guiyang, Chengdu and Chongqing for a week-long study mission; the delegation comprises developers and contractors as well as works consultants and banking officials. The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence is officially opened, marking a new era of Hong Kong's museum services. Located in Shau Kei Wan, the museum is developed from an old fort built in 1887.
