From veterans to the very hydrofoils and catamarans, one of the world's largest and most varied transport fleets plies Hong Kong's waters. Ferries are essential for travelling to outlying islands and in the inner harbour, they supplement other modes of transport. The two main operators, Star Ferry Company Limited and the Hongkong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited, carried about 150 000 passengers daily in 1998.
