Hong Kong Repertory Theatre

The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre staged six productions in 84 performances in 1997, attracting 52 423 people. Apart from its major productions, the company toured schools and community centres regularly, giving free performances, lecture- demonstrations and workshops. It gave 14 performances and workshops to 9 280 people in 1997. During the summer vacation, the company organised four theatre education day camps for 109 students.

Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is Hong Kong's only professional Chinese music orchestra. In 1997, the 85-member orchestra celebrated its 20th professional season by giving 26 regular concerts and three ensemble concerts attracting 30 510 people. It also organised free outreach performances at community arts centres and schools. In the year, the orchestra organised an International Conference on the Development of Chinese Music in February, and was invited to tour Singapore in June and Canada in November.

Hong Kong Dance Company

The Hong Kong Dance Company is the only professional Chinese dance company in Hong Kong to present Chinese traditional and folk dances and original dance dramas on Chinese and Hong Kong themes. The company presented five productions in 1997, attracting 9 737 people to 17 performances.

It also gave 114 free performances and workshops in schools and community art centres to 57 041 people.

In October 1997, it was invited to participate in the Fifth China Arts Festival in Chengdu and gave two performances of the original dance medley Suchness, attracting 2 366 people.

Chung Ying Theatre Company

The Chung Ying Theatre Company continued its endeavours to promote original plays and Theatre-in-Education. Highlights for 1997 included Dragon Island as the programme celebrating reunification, the black comedy The Professional, the innovative Three Men's Dreams and the children's workshop Giant Wa La La.

City Contemporary Dance Company

The City Contemporary Dance Company staged several performances by local choreographers in 1997, including The Firecracker, Revolutionary Pekinese Opera (Millennium Mix), Thirtysomething and Papa White-beard and his Rainbow Castle. It also supported the performances of other local dance artists and groups, such as Y- Space, DanceArt and Florence Lui. The company received much international exposure in 1997 when it toured Taiwan, France, Israel, Germany and England. Educational and outreach programmes continued to be an important part of its activities. Apart from school tours, the company gave over 1 500 free performances and workshops and staged the highly successful Dancing in the Sun project for the fifth year, which involved students from 16 secondary schools.
