Above: Cast members rehearse for a performance of Guiseppe Verdi's romantic opera Aida at the Cultural Centre in September. Magnificent costumes and sets (top) provided audiences with a spectacular production. Between them, Hong Kong's two municipal councils organised more than 1000 performances during the year, and attracted a total of almost 600 000 people. Other highlights included the Cantonese opera Till the Seas Run Dry, concerts by leading orchestras from the Mainland, Canada and the USA, and performances by the National Ballet of China, the Guangdong Modern Dance Troupe and the Hong Kong Ballet.
