foisted on the people greatly above their intrinsic; valu) except at a big discount. It will be curious to see how the powers that be manage to get over this anomaly. Manchester is strong with prices anywhere from a shilling apiece upwards over these current here. Liverpool Cotton has fluctuat- ed within narrow bounds, having been up to 6.85d, | but comes this morning 6.801, yesterday, when at the former figure 6.64d, was quoted for Septem Egyptian is ber and 6.59d, December/January. firm at 9d. The August export figures are not yet in, neither is the news of the August condition of the American crop. The New York market. continues very strong, 3 yard goods being quoted 118. 2d. The Cotton quotations are 12.38 cents for October, 12.44 cents for November, and 12.45 cents for December option. Bombay is reported as flat, with no business doing to speak of Cotton rates for forward delivery are a little easier, buying for 5.35 Japan having been done at Tls. 23.25/23.80) for Tungchow November/December shipment. The market book is again a blank so far as transactions from first hands are concerned, but we have heard of the sale of 50 caves good White Shirtings, that were cheaply bought, at a price that gives bare commission. Holders are complaining bitterly ċ

of the dulness of the market. A fair amount of re- sales, chiefly American makes, are going on, prices showing some firmness. In Drills we hear of Enoree F.F. at Tls. 4.50, Pacolet at Tls. 5.00 and Pepperell at Tls. 5.27. In Sheetings Loray A. and Abbeville, at Tìs. 4.721, Sapesa at Tls. 4.82}, Orr 2.85 yds. at Tls. 4.873, Indian Head Tle. 4.97), and Buck's Head Tls. 5,05. There is a good de mand for American Shirtings and uffalo LL are said to have been done at Tls. 4,70 and 4.70 yard goods at Tls. 3.35/40. Cotton Fiannels are selling in retail quantities at steady prices. At the Auctions prices have not shown much regularity, even with similar goods, greys and whites being very much in and out, a glance at the detailed lists being the best way to form an idea of the trend of the market. Turkey Reds were weaker in some chops and firmer in others, and the same may be said of Fast Black Italians, but Venetians were rather firmer, Woollens show a drooping tendency.

Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai, 3rd Sept., 1909, state:-- Allthough Exchange has ruled rather stronger than when we closed our last there is a great deal of dubiousness in the minds of all as to whether a further rise may be expected or not. This has forced operators to continue to hold off, with the consequence that another week of practically stagnation has passed. Nothing more serious has occurred to cause us to change our views; we still expect to see a good demand spring up in the near future, although circumstance, such as the unexpected advance in Exchange, may defer it for a few weeks. The hot weather is scarcely over yet, and many of the dealers are still away, but those that are about are keeping in regular touch with the Import houses, but the discrepancy be- tween the ideas of sellers and buyers is still very marked. As regards the future the situation is almost unique. Forward business for the Spring is quite out of the question at present and no one seems inclined to encourage it with the present uncertainty regarding Cotton-even Manufac turers could not do more than quote fancy prices to be on the safe side. The prospects are, there- fore, somewhat consoling to the holders of old stocks, for the supply must be considerably re- duced during the next few months when the orders for the Autumn trade run out, But it is the un- expected that always happens, and it may possibly turn out that the sanguine buyers here, to whom the heavy shipments of the last few months are coming, have provided for more continuous sup- plies. There must be a fairly full quantity of Fancy goods under order, judging by te numer- ous, though small, perhaps, indents that have gone through during the past two months. It is also. pretty generally understood that the Auction houses have laid in their requirements for some months ahead, so that these are two factors that have to be reckoned with, but what we have written applies more particularly to Manchester makes. The Americ n goods that are here and on the way are most certainly more safe-guarded as regards fresh supplies, and, if they are ever going to re- gain their position in the trade, the next few months should give them their opportunity. A significant incident which has occured not two hundred miles from here, and in all probability will soon spread over the Country, is the trouble that is commencing in the collection of taxes, the Authorities refusing to accept payment in the so- called "copper" tea cash coins (that have been
