This is destined to be the case with Manchester goods from now on, the figures on the fourth page of this issue showing, only so far, any real excess Stocks are ac- in the imports over re-exports. cumulating, and the hopes that were entertained at the beginning of the year of a big reduction on the 30th June will not now be fulfilled. According to native advices there is a little more inquiry from our chief dependencies, but so far it has not made itself manifest except in a rather better turnover from second hands. The complaint is general of an insufficient rain fall, which as yet has not caused any harm, the consequences, if it holds off much longer, how- ever, will be serious. An enquiry from New- chwang has been met with some fairly cheap resales of American goods, but the total quantity of both Drills and Sheetings does not amount to a thousand bales. In other goods fresh sales consist of retail quantities of miscellaneous des- $1,100/1,150 per picul. criptions, showing a small but genuine consump- .$1,160/1,200 do.
tive demand. So far the enquiry has not trou- bled Importers much, they thinking that the Saltpetre demand may become more pronounced after the fifth of the fifth moon, which falls on the 22nd proximo. So much, however, depends on the fin- ancial situation of the country. At present it remains in a hopeless muddle and nothing seems to be done to elucidate the terribly, complicated mess into which it has been allowed to drift. Suggestions and warnings given to the Govern- ment are apparently completely ignored, and all the evils to he expected from the indiscriminate issue of a debased coinage, supplemented by the circulation of unsecured paper money, are staring the trade in the face. This is the chief stumbling block one seca ahead, and as it must he apparent to every one, is there any wonder that there is no confidence, but only anxiety as to the future. Sufficient supplies, however, are still in the hands of the dealers to enable them to meet
what demand there is, unless something especially tempting is offered to them. Po sitisfy the demand from Newchwang this week they have been induced to make some conce sions in American makes, prices, however, being very inconsistent. The following re-sales of Drills are reported: --Three Fish Tls 4.37} Dog Tls. 4.40, 4 Parrot, Heaven Mandarin and Large and Small Eagles Tls 4.60, Cameron Tls, 4,80, Massachuset- tes and Pacolet Tis. 4,85, Pepperell Tls. 4.95, and the follow Sheetings:-Buffalo A Tis. 4.40, Stag and Dog and Orr. Very few orders appear to be going through from here. As regards the Auctions, a better feeling has shown itself on the whole. Again the lighter weight Shirtings were a little weaker in most cases, but the heavier makes improved on last
as did the higher makes of White Shirt | ings, the ordinary reel goods eing weaker. White Irishes were also easier, and common Grey T.-Cloths, but the better makes and Jeans all sold at higher prices. Turkey Reds early in the interval had a weaker tendency, but to-day most An improvement. Messrs. Noël, Murray & Co. in their Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai 28th May, 1909, state:— The market remains in the same quiet state, almost bordering on stagnation, while every one is wondering how, under these circumstances, certain goods come to be re-exported week after week to the extent they do. The Auctions only account for a fractional part of the quantity, so as the majority of Importers disclaim making fresh sales, it can only be assumed that old stocks are being drawn upon to supply require ments to a fair extent. It is true that goods sold to arrive are meeting with prompt clear-chops showed ances so soon as they are discharged from the steamer, but with many items deliveries have exceeded the imports. The same could have been said of American' goods until quite recently
shown a firmer tendency on the whole.
