Messrs. Ilbert & Co.'s Weekly Report, dated Shanghai, March 31st, 1909 state:-With the exception of Newchwang, Chefoq and Tsingtao, inquiry from all the dependencies has been very quiet, though cargo has continued to move from stock in fair quantity. From Newchwang, a certain amount of encouragement has been given to buyers owing to the fact that the arrival of the shipments rent up to that market for the opening of the season, has elicited a demand for further supplies, resulting in the purchase during the week by dealers for that market of about 4,00) bales American Drills and Sheetings, 1,'00 bales Bombay Yarn and $00 bales English Jeans, and a few small lines of other goods. Hankow still continues to buy practically nothing, and business has been further humpered as far as that outlet is concerned by a general strike amongst all the native shop employees, who demand higher wages, the fundamental cause of their complaint being increased living costs owing to the debased value to which the copper currency of the province has fallen. A settlement is expected to be arrived at shortly, but coming on the top of a very indifferent demand, it has e used an easy tone in prices and several of the principal lines of staples are distinctly lower höfli at auctions and in the few resules reported during the week! It is reported that th low wated in the Yangtsze during last month has caused a considerable congestion of cargo at lankow, but that this is beginning to go Forward in quantity now, and the money thus released may therefore before long require to find investment in imports. Grey Shirtings 81-lb.- The market continues on the weak sid with only a small demand from a few of the kiver markets. Sales reported are Blue Two Fish at Tls. 3.10, Red Pagoda at is. 3.10) Soldier at Tiș, 3.00, Hed Two Cish at Tls. 2.90, and Blue Two Men at Tls. 2.65, Yueu Fong auction was decidedly weak but prices strengthened up at Ewo to-day. 4-1h, to 7-lb.-▲ HONGKONG-Mr. P. Eduljee, in his Report dated sale of Ship 7-1b. is returned at Tls. 1.95. HONGKONG, 17th April:-Prices are declining, the market lapsed into state of quietude from Hankow is reported to have been interrupted by 16th April states:-Towards the close of last mail Auctions steady. 19-lb. to 11-lb.-Business in market being dull.
