Messrs Noel, Murray & Co, in their latest Oil Sandalwood · Piece Goods Report, dated Shanghai 8th January state-New Chinese Weights and Measures.----In view of the early adoption of the new standards, we extract the following :rom The Indian Trade Journal-"Up to the present time Chinose weights and measures have been distinguished by their extraordinary diversity. In nearly every provine different standards have obtained, and even in some towns cirpenters, and tailors use measures differing from one another by qui'e an appreciable amount. A message from Peking, dated October 2th, 1907, announced that an Im- perial Edict had that day been issued ordering the Board of Revenue and Commerce to introduce a new system of weights and measures throughout the Chinese Empire. The pr. ject devised by the Board of Revenue and Commerce and submitted to and approved by the Committee of Reforms without modification, has become law. The standards have been defined in terms of the metric system, and the various units are as follows. The new unit of length is the "tchi"; it is defined as exactly 32 centimetres The capacity table has, as its unit, the "to," which is equal to 19,355 litres, while the unit of weight is the "lian," of 37,301 grams." The latest move in Feking, which seems to have caused some forebodings in the Foreign Countries chiefly interested in China, is looked upon by the native Mercantile Community here with equanimity and was evidently anticipat- ed as quite inevitable. It has not unnaturally given rise to some apprehensiveness, but seems to have been so well timed, and done in such a thoroughly masterful manner, that no deleterious consequences are likely to be felt in the Provinces, although it has caused some uneasiness in the Capital itself. Arrangements to me t theming settlement are practically completed now, and seldom, if ever, have the Native and Foreign Banks stood in such a relatively independent position as at present. The former have repaid all their loans from latter and are said to have six or seven lakhs of tael in hand, which is expected to be doulled before the settling day arrives. The great reduction in the price of Rice, too, during the last few weeks has done a lot to help the situation, and should soon cause a greatly improved demand for Imports all round. these prospects in view, one of the dealers are busily engaged in booking goods for delivery after China New Year, where holders are prepared to
Par P. & O. steamer, Assaye, sailed on 9th accept a slight advance on prices wanted for cash, Jan 1909. Boston. 100 bales waste silk. Ham- but for the most part the latter prefer to take the burg-19 cases bird's Feathers. Manchester.-348 risk of holding themselves, with the uncertainty bales waste silk. Barcelona,-3 cases silk. of both Cotton and Silver, unless of course they-231 bales raw silk. Marseilles,-40 bales raw can seo a fair chancet repleing, which seems doubtful in the present condition of the hom markets. The enquiry for Newchwang continues good, but it is unlikely much more will be shipped untill after the holidays are well over. The other Ports north of us are quiet, but a demand continues for Szechuen where 84lbs. Shirtings and Indian Yarn seem to be in most request. Clearances have not been quite so good as last week A feature of the market during the interval has been another sale of Dyed Fancy goods en block, some 1,300 cases chiefly Fast Black Cotton Italians, being taken for a lump sum, cash down. We understand a further 1,000 Cases, mixed goods, are also open for offers in the same way, but are not so easily placed. Telegrams from Manchester advise a firm inarket for the most part, but some buying appears to be going on for this. Yarns are a fraction higher. A rumour is gaining ground that the Cotton crop is not going to be so large as was expected at one time, and prices are steadily advancing in the selling centres. Liverpool now quotes Mid Amer- ican 5.04d for spot and 4.80d for "February/March, while in New York the quotation for the latter month has advanced to 8.39 cents. The Export of Plain Cottons from Manchester last month was 30 million yards, against 29 millions for December 1907. The market in New York is fully firm, but in spite of that some buying is being done for this market in the medium weight, goods. There is a good demand for all Spinuings&fair sales arereport ed at steady prices. Native Cotton keeps very firm.
