MANILA, 31st October. Manila, Nominal Taal: Nominal, Iloilo: Market has ruled quiet over the interval the cargo per e.s. "Fiume was taken up by Chinese in Iloilo at P. 5.- b. s. -A few lorchadas of new rop have already come in and these have found buyers at P. 6.004 b. a-which at ex: 2/1 is equal to 28. 19. 2. per ton f. o. b. Old stocks a very small, we estimate there are not more than 50 tons of these still available for export. Whether for milling operations is very favourable, con. sequently we may expect to seo arrivals rather earlier than usual this season.
PIECE GOODS.
Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co. of Shangbai in their latest Piece Gods Report, dated Shanghai 18th November, states:- Although there has been more
movement during the interval in American goods, and rather better prices are now being offered, our market remains for the most part in a state of stagnation. Fresh business is altogether out of the question, the dealers still being able to supply all wants from the goods they have in hand, supplemente i by the Auctions, which by the way, we under- stand are to be still furth-r reduced in quantity this week, For English goods there is absolutely no enquiry privately, and the wretchedly wet weather has not helped clearances again. The outlook is still very gloomy, the enquiry for Newchwang being just a flash in the pan in view of the early closing of that Port. Tiantain is in a hopeless condition, but has small enquiry for Yarne.
Д received from Hauk.w yesterday of the failure of four Bank! there caused a scare on this market, but the sebsequent information that the actual losa will not amount to more than some ten per cent of the sum named, 3,70 1,000 tarl, has hal a reassuring effect here. It is difficult to understand why there should be such troubles at that Port, as tra le there should be on quite a satisfactorily sound basis now, 88 the Railway is said to be tapping districts hitherto unexploited and the export trade should be greatly benefitted by the pre- sent low Exchange. The Corean market is lifeless. The reason is not at all clear, for the crops are quite good, but there is simply on disposition to buy. News was received early in the interval that the Cotton trade dispute had been settled on the basis of the reduction
The news
in Wages not coming int effect until March instead of January, the Mills to resume work on the 9th instant, though subsequent telegrams say they will only work half time for the present. The market is strong and quotations are over the prices ruling here, which crmes about by the low rate of Exchange. Cotton remains fairly steady in Liverpool, the quotations for Mid American coming 5.07d for spot, 4.86d. for the rest of the month and 4.71d. for Egyptian is firmer at 8jd. February/March. As regards the steadiness ia Cotton the Manchester Guardian market report of 19th October says:-"The movement of American Cotton continues freely, and perhaps the slightly better reports of trade in the United States may be doing something to balance the state of things in Lancashire. Here there is a remark- able absence of effective demand, and even often a month's stoppage of most of the spindles the supply of Yarn seems pretty well up to the demand. We hear of looms stopping every day, and were the labour dispute to be settled to-morrow it would be some time before the industry gut fairly under way again." Happily the forecast that there were no prospects for an early settlement have not been fulfilled. Trade in the United States is booming now after the long months of depression. The Pre- sidential election seems to have given general satisfaction and has affected a revival in the home demand. Quotations for export, on the basis of 9s, llid. for 8 yard goods, lays them

down sight to ten per cent over this market, so nothing is likely to be done at présent. Cotton is up twenty to thirty points. The actual consumptive demand for Yarns is really not 80 strong as it looks on the face of it.
In many instances business has been purely speculative and the dealers operating bave had to resell at a loss. However, the light stock at present here enables Importers to keep prices up.
It is reported at the close that 2,500 to 3,000 bales Japanese Yarn have been contracted for in Osaka for this market. Local spinnings are strong in sympathy with the imported article. Native Cotton is strong and advancing. The rapid expansion of the Cotton industry in China must not be lost sight of when comparing the figures of the Foreign import trade with former years.

MARINH INSURANCES. Unions have usi gobanged hands during the week at 785 and more shares are wanted at the rate. Cantous have improved to 180 with buyers, and in the absence of sellers it is possible that a higher rate would be paid for any
shares on the market. North Chinas continue with bayers at 87), but no shares appear to be available, China Traders and Yangtzea are unchanged, with the former still in demand.
During the ten days under rodiew our market has remained steady and a fair business has been done, Europe having at last shown signs of iu- provement. At the close, prices are firm with an upward tendency.
