WOOLLENS--

Mesars. Noel, Murray & Co.'s Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, dated Shanghai 11th September 1908, states:-There is, but little of interest to write about the market during the past week, and it is more to keep abreast of statistics, and the Auctions that this issue is published. The Mid-Autumn settling day takes place to-morrow, which is looked upon as a holiday by the Foreign Banks and the Custom House, and on this account there is practically, no inclination on the part of the Native dealers to do business. At the same, there has been some enquiry, but at such low prices that no importer will listen to them. Crop estimates of the coun- try, still continue most favourable, and latest advices from Manchuria estimate this year's Bean crop at 20% over last year's. Should this prove correct, it is only to be hoped the benefits derived therefrom will come to this market, and not be diverted through various channels to other places. Already there appears to be a somewhat better feeling in the Northern markets and the New- chwang dealers have been buying Indian yarn from importers and some American goods from Native holders. The latter are said to have accepted lower rates, when compared with 'other holders, they having suddenly shown as inclina- tion to realize There has also some enquiry from Tientsin, but beyond a few purchases of Indian yarns we have not heard of any business. In the meantime clearances have continued quite fair, ie. they have shown no signs of falling off, and we should like to see the Native, after the settlement, give some indication of their ideas regarding the Spring business. The position is however, so problematical it is difficult to say anything about it. The Manchester market is no doubt firmer in tone, at the close than it was in the earlier part of the week, and enquires thence for counter offers are not so numerous as they have been lately. The most recent telegrams would also indicate that dyers have still orders in their books to run off, as of late they have been asking for more distant delivery. Cotton in Liverpool is now 5.32d. for Mid- Orleans and Egyptians remain unchanged at the previous quotation of 7d. The tone of the New York market, is also firmer as rates are now 8.45 cents, 8.46 cents and 8.50 cents for October, December and January option respecti. vely, as against last week's quotations of 8.52 cents, 8.42 cents and 8.29 cents for the same option. Prices are also expected to keep steady in the immediate future. The Yarn market has suddenly recovered during the past few days, owing to an enquiry arising from the Northern markets, of which the principal buyer has been Newchang. Other markets have bought sparingly. There has been more doing in Japanese and Local Spinnings, clearances of which have kept well up to the mark, and prospects of the coming crop continue favourable as can be seen from regular fall in quotations for forward delivery. At the Yuen Fong Auction on 3rd instant, the lighter weights and a few 10-lbs. Grey Shirtings showed slight advances, but the heavier qualities in many instances showed decline in prices. Taken all round White Shirtings are better, but an im- provement is still wanted, for Turkey Rods while prices for Black Cotton Italians were higher. At the E-wo Auction this morning prices for Light Weights and 8.4lbs. Grey Shirtings were lower, only two qualities showing any advances, and the same can almost be said about 10-ths. Grey Shirt- ings. In the Heavier makes and White Shirtings prices are rather higher. In Woollens the firmer tendency, mentioned in our last issue was not maintained, and most of the prices are rather lower,
