HONGKONG JOCKEY CLUB RACE MEETING.
FIRST DAY.
OD,
THE HONGKONG WEEKLY PRESS AND
Tuesday, February 11th. There can be no question of the popularity of the annual carnival of the Hongkong Jockey Club. Only one circumstance is needed to insure its complete success, and that is fine weather. Unfortunately this was not available yesterday. But when tus clouds cleared away in the forenoon, and the sun shone in a blue sky, many holiday makers thought that the threatening weather had passed, and before the first race bad started there was the usual large and enthusiastic attendance. Other conditions, such as an attractive number of entries, a magnificent course, and perfect arrangements carried out by hard working and obliging officials
relied always be
for everyone having to do with the management of the races does all in his power to further the interests of that old established institution-the Jockey Club. There are few places in the world where a more representative and cosmopo- itan orowd can be seen than at the picturesque Happy Valley on raos days. Men and women of many nationalities assemble here on this festive Occasion, and there can be no doubt that they thoroughly enjoy themselves. With all the grandstands adorned with hunting, with numerous ladies present in the prettiest of costumes, and with various Orientals in the picturesque garbs of the East, the scene was an imposing one. Chinese, 88 usaal, literally swarmed the green enclosure, and dotted every point of vantage round the course. In the enclosure this time there was also a special stand fenced off for sailors and soldiers. Perhaps at no other time during the year is the Valley so well patronised, for during the three days that the race meeting lasts a general holiday is looked upon both by Occidental and Oriental
as a privilege which must never be denied.
The racing on the whole, notwithstanding the frequent showers which made the turf some- what heavy, was very successful, and reflects great oredit on the officials conducting it. There were many large fields and not a few exciting finishes, while the times registered were up to the average. His Excellency the Governor and Lady Lugard, with the Government Honse party, arrived before the tiffa beur, and remained until the last race was ran. - n appropriate programme of music was played during the day by the band of the Middlesex Regiment.
It
Wag A busy day both for those in charge of the Pari Mutuel and the Cash Sweeps, especially the latter which were largely patronised on account of the high dividends they paid. Two or three lucky drawers of winning ponies in these sweeps received over $1,000 for the fire they invested. The highest price paid for a winner in the Pari Mutuel was $30.40, the price paid on Pine Tree in the Victoria Stakes, while in the last race of the day, the Racing States, Dalliance, the third pony, paid $67.50 for a place.
