figure by about 50,000 pieces, that is to 2,744,000 pieces. Taking the average of the past five years as a basis for the quantity of clearances of American Sheetings during July, August and September, which is 1,128,009 pieces, the stock is thus reduced hy September 30 to 1,616,000 pieces. The position, therefore, to-day is practically the same as in June of 1905, at which time stocks were down to about this last-named quantity, for whereas in
course would counter-balance clearances, this 1905 fresh cargo coming forward in its usual
season there is nothing to come forward. The latter point might further be enlarged upon, for it is well known that no fresh supplies can come forward for a considerable time further off than September 30 next, but at present it is sufficient to note that the market values of 3-yard shootinga is Tls, 4.60, and that clearances are going on upon a scale which is slightly in excess of the normal
MISCELLANEOUS EXPORTS.
The following is from Messrs. Arnhold, Karberg & Co.'s fortnightly Produce Circular, dated Shanghai, 27th June, 1907,:-Gallnuts.-Market weak; holders are not willing to reduce their prices although the demand from home is de- creasing, Cowhides. In the last fortnight the last stocks have been disposed of and the sonson may be considered closed." Tobacco.-No desirable quality to be had. Feathers.- Hardly any cargo
option. The market for piece goods keeps very strong and further return shipments are being made hence. The yarn market has shown con- siderably more activity during the interval in Indian spinnings for which there appears to be some quite satisfactory orders from the country. Japanese yarn, however, is easier in sympathy with Osaka, but holders AIY not generally disposed to wake concessions, The local mills ar not having time. Most of them are curtailing their supply a happy by working only four days a week, the present price of cotton allowing but little margin at present, and the raw staple keeping no- inally very firm though the stock is much mixed and quality very irregular. Clearances of English goods have improved somewhat, but it is felt that many of the dealers are waiting until next month before taking delivery in order to avail them- selves of the higher exchange they had previous-average.
unfortunate that the legitimate course of trade should be constantly interrupted by these vag- aries of exchange. Stocks.-The forms for returns of stock at the end of this month have already been circulated and holders should be prepared to make them as promptly as possible so as to have as accurate a return as possible at this juncture Some interested parties are trying to make out that the estimates based on returns for the 31st December are excessive, and it would be a thou- sand pities to have the figures discredited. Grey Shirtings. Some actual sales have been made from first hands during the interval at rather hetter prices than holders were offered before, Although these prices are considerably below re- placing cost importers have met the demand to a certain extent, and quite a fair number of small parcels have been sold of hoth 8,4 lbs, and 10 lbs makes. White Shirtings.-Are going steadily into consumption, but fresh supplies are evidently not so much in request as grey goods. and this is borne out by the auctions, where prices continued to be very irregular. Drills and Sheetings-Holders of the former are strong. Tis. 4.50 being wanted for Pepperell, but so far not meeting with much response. Fancy Goods. -In the private market fresh business appear: to be a stand still, while from stock only retail transactions are passing. At auction Turkey Rods have kept fairly steady to firm for the old chops, the new ones being rather slated on their second appearance. For the Fast Black Cotton Italians firmer prices were paid almost through- |
Woollens, -The market is decidedly better and prices at auction have shown advances in Camlets of as much as four mace in same colours, but they run very irregularly. And the sale with Long Ells, but they have only varied about & cinds, Lastings are distinctly firmer and Spanish also show a steady advance. Cotton Yarn.—Indian.- A very satisfactory increase in the demand during this week has to be reported, especially for Nos. 10 and 20, which would seem to confirm the suspicion entertained for some time past by holders that buying orders were be- ing held back. It has caused a distinctly firmer feeling in the market and many of the transac- tions show an advance of a tael and even more.

PIECE GOODS. Messrs. Noel, Murray & ('o.'s Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods trade, dated Shanghai, 27th June, 1907, states:We are glad at last to be able to advise a distinctly better feeling in this market, and the ray of light that has broken on it is very welcome. The more settled state of affairs in the North, and generally satisfactory reports regarding the crops, probably have a good deal to do with it, but beyond that is undoubted ly the feeling that the statistical position, in face of the small fresh supplies that can be placed on the market before the end of the year; is far more favourable than it has been for some time past. Especially so is this the case with American makes, as practically nothing more can be reccir- ed here this year, unless orders are placed very promptly, which is not likely as long as present prices are maintained on the other side. liveries compare satisfactorily with last year to date in most articles, and give very fair promise to be fully up to the average off-take of the first half year, and there is no reason to think they will not continue on the same scale. prospect is that it will be much more if the good news received from Manchuria is maintained. The agricultural outlook is now said to be most promising; the people are, apparently, pleased and contented with the officials that have been appointed and have great confidence in them, moreover, satisfactory agreements have been made by the Chinese Authorities to put the rail- way tariff on an equitable basis and so do away with the disabilities that have practically put Newchwang out of the trade so far. The Tairen (Dalny) Customs is to be opened on the 1st July, and in order to assist in that the South Man- churian Railway has agreed not to transport goods beyond Kwantung without a certificate stating that duty has been paid, the customs tariff, etc., being the saine as at Newchwang. The consum mation of these arrangements will be watched with interest, as if carried through with sincerity it will enable direct shipments to Newchwang to be resumed. Manchester continues very strong and the quotations received for staple goods are fully a shilling to eighteen pence over current prices here. Cotton has again been subject to fluctations in Liverpool, Mid-American dropping to 6.95d, and recovering yesterday to 7.15d. the price for "futures on the 25th being 6.75d, when spot was 7.11d. In New York 11.44 cents is quoted for October and 11.60 cents for January
and Szechuen. The few 128 and 16s. which have been hought for Kiangsi are also firm, while the No. 20s show some irregularity, though the more favourite spinnings are decidedly stronger in price.
