Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co.'s Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, dated Shanghai, 30th August, 1906, states:- -There is unfortunately nothing of interest to report about our market. which remains in the same dull and dragging condition. Dealers are, and have been for some time now, complaining bitterly of the non-payment by the merchants for goods sold to them as far back as January and February last, at prices which compare very unfavourably with present values, and it is felt that some decided action is necessary to place matters on a more satisfactory footing. Bona-fide clearances are still as unsatis- factory as ever, but, money being plentiful, fair quantities of goods are being paid for, either to liquidate old exchange settlements or to take advantage of the rates now ruling. For staple goods there is very little enquiry, what demand there is being easily supplied by the auctions and native re-sales. The consuming markets are doubtless "sitting on the fence for the time being, and this is not to be wondered at when one takes into account the excessive stocks, the continued firmness of exchange, and the uncer- tainty regarding cotton. A few clearances have been made for Kurea and more are expected during the next few days, but the demand is far from satisfactory. It is reported that there is a little better feeling as regards Tientsin, possibly in view of obtaining supplies before the port is closed; but we do not look for much relief from this source, that is if the quantities reported to have been booked “direct” for next Spring amount to even half. The latest quotations for Mid- American is 5.521. and 10;',. for Egyptian. The former shows a considerable advance on the quotation of 5.20d received on 24th inst. Exports of plain cottons from England for the fortnight up to 24th instant are wired privately as 9 million yards. As far as we are aware there has been no business from first hands, and from native squrees wo have not heard of a single transaction. As already stated a few clearance are to he noted for Korea, and a better feeling is expected from Tientsin whence certain orders are said to have been issued, but so far there is no apparent effect on the market. The auctions, which are the only indicators of the market, show that prices are slightly easier. In Indian yarn the free buying mentioned in our last issue has fallen off and the total sales for the week only amount 2.668 balos. of these the River Ports have taken over 2,000
ludes, demand for the Northern Ports being evidently supplied for the present. Cotton Yarn. - Indian.-The sales announced amount to 2,668 bales of which nearly 2,000 bales are taken for the River Ports, the Northern Ports being ap- parently satisfied with their purchases in the week. Prices for No. 10s. are steady, while these for No. 20s, are about one tael
per
bale higher.
