CHINA OVERLAND TRADE REPORT.

for tonnage in any direction, neither in coal nor coast-freights. Rates are again at their lowest ebb and are weak at that, but we do not think any ship would accept an offer below current rates unless absolutely obliged to by force of circumstances.

SHARE REPORTS. HONGKONG, 24th Angust, 1906.-There has been a little more movement in the market this week, and a comparatively fair business has been transacted in many stocks. Rates, with a few exceptions, hare not shown any decided changes, and outside of an incipient firmness in China Sugars, Fires, and Indos, and a slight weak- ness in Docks, we have no special features to report.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais hare been placed during the week at 8850 cum the dividend of $16.47 paid on the 20th inst., and the market closes steady at $835 ex dividend. Nationals have found farther buyers at $47.

MARINE INSURANCES.-Unions have declib. ed to $790 with small sales, but close with like buyers at that rate. Cantons continue on offer at $330 without finding buyers. The Northern stocks have been negotiated in Shanghai at quotations, but we have heard of no local bugi-

DERS.

FIRE INSURANCES.-Hongkongs have im proved to 8325, after small sales at $3221, and close steady at the former figure. Chinas con- tinue in demand and are difficult to obtain, offers of $92 failing to bring out any shares.

SHIPPING. Hongkong, Canton and Macaos have improved their position and sales have been effected at S27 and $274 ex dividend, the market closing with further buyers at the latter ra'e. Indos have been in demand all the week, chiefly for the north, and the rate gradually rose to $5 after sales at $734 and 874; a fair business bas been transacted, chi fly at the bighest rate. At the time of cl sing a few shares are obtainable at $75, but the market closes very steady with no shares offering under that rate. China and Manilas have advanced to $22 with sales, and cl. se with further buyers at that. Douglises remain quite neglected with a few small lots on offer at $47. Shells have found further buyers at 27 and close with buyers. Star Ferries remain neglected and without business.

REFINERIES. China Sugars were placed in the early part of the week at $145 and 8146! for the seitlements, and closed much firmer at $143 with buyers. Some forward transao. tions are reported at rates equivalent to $150 cash. Luzons remain unchanged and without business.

MINING. Raubs bare changed hands during the week at $71, and later at $7, the market closing with sellers at the latter rate. We have nothing else to report under this heading.

123

at $13, we have nothing to report under this Posts at $20, Green Islands at $22, and Watsons heading. China Borneos have eased up a little and are now offering at $12, and China Light and Powers have improved to $104.
