[November 18, 1905.

Auction sales, as the only business we have heard of is a sale of 81b. Beaver Jeans at Tls. 3.25, 10lb. Beaver Jeans at Tls. 4.40 and a few Lion No. 12 Black Lastings at Tls. 14.75, but we doubt very much if any of them were done direct with im- porters. At Auction prices did not show any marked difference one way or another although at to-day's sales there were a few makes went at rather better rates. White Shirtings did not go well and the same can be said of the Black Cotton Italians. Prices for Cablets were rather better but those for Long Ells went alightly lower. For Spanish Stripes prices were much the same as last week. Cotton Yarn.--Indian. As demand is restricted to the River Ports, business has been

to 1.744 bales.

Mr. Eduljee, in his Report, dated Hongkong, 17th November, says: There is no important very quiet and the sales announced only amount business yet to report in this market, but as harvesting in the country approaches completion demand cannot be far off. In the meantime prices have further declined $2 per bale, and as there are no large buyers in the market, values may be considered entirely nominal. Silver is still advancing, and on resumption of demand the tone of exchange will be a potent factor in determining the attitude of buyers, and the re- adjustment of prices. Bombay continues steady.

Messrs. Hughes and Hough, in their Coul Report of Nov. 17th, state that 17 steamers are expected at Hongkong with a total of 87,900 tons of coal. Since November 4th 8 steamers have arrived with a total of 26,160 tons of coal. market generally rules much firmer. Quotations:— Cardiff. .$15.00 $16.00 ex-ship, nominal. Australian ......$10.00 $11.00 8x-ship, steady. Yubari Lump...$12.00 nominal.

Miiki Lump $11.00 to $12.00 steady. Moji Lump......$10.00 to $11.00 ex-ship steady, Akaike Lump...$10.50 to $11.00 steady.

With a steady steam of receipts stocks continue to increase, and before the close of the year we may expect a further heavy addition thereto. Sales of the interval aggregate 2,233 bales, receipts amount to 22,635, and stocks estimated at 78,000 bales.

Local Manufacture :- No business is reported. Japanese Yarn:-Firm though quiet.

Raw Cotton-There is no life in the market whatever, despite a concession in rates of from $1 to $2 per picul. Indian descriptions, both new and old, are very difficult to place and no busi- ness can be induced. Stocks about 2,900 bales old and 175 bales new Bengals. In China kinds sales of 150 bales Shanghai at $25 to $24 are reported. Stock 790 bales. We quote to-day Bengals $20 to $23 and China $23 to $25.

Exchange on India has continued to advance and shows an advance of 6 points during the interval, closing steady at Rs. 153 for T/T and Rs. 154 for Post. On Shanghai 71, and on Japan 100%.

The undernoted business in imported and local spinnings is reported from Shanghai during the fortnight ended the 11th instant, viz:-

Indian :-Market weak and declining, deprecia- tion in values 2 to 3 Taels, total sales 4,000 bales, estimated stock 80,000 bales.

Japanese: Total sales 1,500 bales on the basis of Tls. 91 to 97 for No. 16s and Tls. 102 to 106 for No. 208, prices showing a decline of 2 to 3 Taels.

Local: No business is reported.

PIECE GOODS.

Messrs. Noel, Murray & Co.'s Report on the Shanghai Piece Goods Trade, dated Shanghai, 9th November, 1905, states:-Since writing our last circular the usual Autumn Race Holidays have taken place, but even this is not sufficient excuse for the present state of the import market. From all sides we hear the same remarks that business is practically at a standstill, added to which is the fact that clearances are far from good. News from the different consuming dist- ricts are very meagre and not encouraging, New- chwang having recently taken more than the market there evidently wanted and is now suffer- ing in consequence, while the other Northern market, Tientsin, is doing very little. From the River Ports there are a few orders for Indian spinnings and we hear that there has been a large fire in Hankow which will not tend to improve the prescut bad state of affairs there. The Man- chester market still continues to advance and we have been informed that prices have advanced threepence per piece during the past fortnight. Needless to say we have not heard of any buying for this market, but the advance seems to have taken place in sympathy with the advance of Cotton in Liverpool where Mid-Orleans is now quoted 6.15d. and Egyptian 84d. This tends to confirm the recent estimates of the American Cotton Crop and even now ten and a half willion bales is put down as a very full quantity. Ship- ments from England for the fortnight ending 27th October amounted to twenty-three million yards. The Yarn market keeps very quiet, there being no business is local spinnings while Japan yarns have only been dealt in to the extent of 1,000 bales at declining rates. Locally cotton inclines to be firmer. Piece Goods. Our report on the market this week is really to comment on the
